Hill Style/ASL Longbows Anyone?

I have one from Howard hill that belonged to my wifes grandfather, I love it. 50 years old and still shoots and looks great. They are making me another one I should be getting to go pick up any day now.

JD Berry Morning Star reverse handle. 54# at 28”. Closer to 60# at my draw. Wood arrows. I blew through a turkey with it about a month ago, but never could find the big guy.

How do you like the reverse handle? Can you notice a difference in forgiveness between that and a standard asl?

I greatly prefer the reverse handle to the point where I think that’s all I’d get. I can’t torque the bow, and I like that I can get away with a little shorter bow because it gets into the limbs quicker.

The downside is it looks goofy.

Totally agree RE the goofy look, although the more I see I think the more I'm warming up to them. I still have yet to shoot one, but wouldn't be surprised if there's one in my future.

I went in blind, having never shot one either, but I’m really glad I took the plunge.

I'm pretty intrigued by them, might have to break down and build one. Been shooting a recurve cuz I shoot a lot like a compound, not sure if I wanna mess with it

About 30 days away now from my Yukon styk. Starting to get very anxious to start shooting this thing.

Resisting a Yukon Styk over the next eyar or so is going to be nearly impossible. I've got my PCH that I plan on taking on any hunts where I need to fly and space is at a premium, but the idea of an ASL I can take down like that, but being cut much closer to centre and having yew cores, is REALLY cool.

I decided I couldn't live without one any longer lol. I just bought a straight limb longbow kit from bingham. The plan is build that one and get my feet wet with building glass bows and design a reverse handle for the next one.

Finally got the email, glue up on the Yukon started this week. First custom bow I’ve ordered and I’m the most impatient human ever so this has been rough. Looking forward to late archery mule deer here in Idaho with the new bow!

Love my 40lb Bear Montana, it's quiet, looks gorgeous to me and I got it for an absolute bargain.
It is pretty sedate with my 540gr Arrows but man do they pack a wallop.

Some degen dumped a half doz of them near by and they've been living wild for a while so thought I would thin the herd, they're pretty tasty

The deflex in the riser and reflexed limbs put the Montana well outside ASL territory, but that chicken looks pretty great!

Can you enlighten me a little more on the differences, as I've had people tell me it's an ASL which is why I thought it is, is it more what's called a hybrid?

This is one of those things that I've seen plenty of internet arguments on but the characteristics as I understand them are:

• Narrow/thick limb profile
• Straight limbs or very close to it - some have very slight reflex (e.g. Northern Mist American) or deflex (my St Patrick Lake Longbows Pacific Styk) are used with the reflex being a bit faster and the deflex being quieter and more forgiving.
• A simple grip, generally straight or dished

Somebody may nitpick the finer points of those characteristics.

Your bow is a mild reflex/deflex longbow, although it does have a similar profile when strung.

@Wilderlife's bow early in the thread may have caused confusion with its locator grip, but I didn't see anything else in the thread with deflex in the riser.

I haven't shot a Montana but maybe someone else here has and can comment on the differences.

I put my name on the list for a St Patrick Lake Yukon Styk a few days ago. Yew cores with clear glass - can't wait to lay my eyes and put my hands on it, but there's still eight months to go. Erik, the bowyer, is a great guy to be in touch with.
