Is there a problem with cotton long johns?????

It's always the green box, in case you're wondering. (We didn't have the red box)

Come on now, trying to pull your jeans over the long johns you slept in the night before? Ass all saggy and what not, soaked to the core after walking for ten minutes. Then there was always the sock issue. Pants on the inside or out? Long johns over socks or under?

Either way, your ass was in for a loooong cold day. And nobody to text.

Red box, old skool federal.

You could be dropped in the middle of nowhere, outfitted completely from Walmart (rifle included) and not want for much. Just look at 99% of the kids out there. They've got it all figured out.

Look at the conditions they're in, are they comfy or miserable looking?

Ian

I have been plenty uncomfortable in certain conditions even with the best gear and the look on my face I am sure would have you looking for something else even if it was the best stuff I have used.....sometimes the conditions just suck ;)

One thing I always look for in a review someone writes is atleast somewhere in it they should mention atleast one thing at a minimum they didn't like or could be improved upon. I have yet to find a piece of gear that I thought couldn't be tweaked to suit my needs better even if it might make the product less marketable to the masses overall.

I'm still in the good old days when it comes to clothing...trying to get out.

Never know where a thread is going to go but I still expected more names that Aaron to pop up as sources of good info.

I've trusted people for gear selections experts only to find they were just searching sites like these ands going with what is popular... that's how I ended up with a Tite Spot quiver and less than the best drop away. Popular is hardly ever the best, so isolating the few guys who try a lot of different things and sort out the best is better that popular opinions.

I'll throw another name out there for archery...Justin Davis. He try's a lot, a little young but he is getting there.

It's very hard to sort out of these forums who are the fan boys, Pro staffers, or even product makers pimping gear from guys who have tested stuff on their own dime and some of them still are not reliable it they don't hunt the same way as you.

This is why I dropped off the pro staff and now just a fan boy. ;)

When it comes to rifles, don't even bother to ask. They all shoot MOA all day when you do your part but can't hit the broad side of a barn. As for bullets, anyone that didn't get a DRT (another one of the gayest blurbs in hunting) experienced a failure.

It's a vicious circle of bullshit.

Just one other note about guides. Just about every big company offers discounts or deals for licensed guides. Some are better than others, and outfitters can get better deals if they get all the gear for their guides in one place. So, just cause you see a hunting guide wearing it does not automatically bless it for me.

Hard work and bad ass, yes, but its not a very financially rewarding job for most. I know some guys that would wear anything they can get for free.

I know very few guides that would actually wear something if it didn't work just cause they got it for free. The amount of days in he field most of my guide friends log means it's much more important to use stuff that works to be comfortable than use junk cause they didn't have to pay for it.

Sorry. Should have been more clear. I wasn't implying that the stuff was junk, just that whether a particular guide uses FL, Sitka, KUIU, UA, or whatever does not necessarily make it the only or even the best choice. Sometimes its just a matter of what deal they or the outfitter can get.

Remember pouring two cups of sugar in with those flavor packs...just what a ten year old needed when running the creeks with the dog.

Seems that everyone's "best" is good. Meaning there likely isn't going to be that much difference in performance. 850 down fill from Costco probably isnt light years beyond Marmot. But who knows, a Ralph Lauren polo shirt sure fits fine and looks nice. But is it worth $50? Dunno but I'm not wearing Wally specials.

Clothing aside, the DIY Mod Forum is pretty cool. As hard goods go, it seems I monkey with everything to get it "just right". Tonight's project? Yanking all the buckles and Velcro crap off a Maxpedition "compass pouch" that they said wouldn't fit my Garmin and I bought anyway. And was right. Fits like a glove. Little quick release kinda jimmy and it should be good to go.

This is about my exact list. There's a couple others that are my go to on various things too that don't post too much anymore. It's not hard to weed out someone talking from experience and someone talking from their ass.
