Don't get a 30-06

I know a lot of guys that hunt and hardly any are on here.
I would say 1 out of 40.
In Oklahoma 30/06 is heavily used and I think will always be a favorite.
Same, the 30-06 is incredibly common here in AK, people use it for everything. I think I know like 5 rokslide here in AK but probably ~30 people who use the 30-06 and are not on rokslide.

It’s ok…you are one of those buys that did zero research before buying I’m am guessing and went into the store flying blind…just so many better options out there for skilled marksmen and people that can comprehend the differences in bullet construction and know how to choose the right bullet type for the job
Hmmm, nope, you’re 100% wrong about me. Nice try though.

You also must have missed where I’ve stated multiple times that I have fins chambered in smaller cartridges too.

Please make sure he understands the need for ear protection when hunting. Even just a shot or two from a braked rifle can lead to permanent hearing damage or ringing. It's a reality I'm all too familiar with.

It's all fine and dandy to be tough until your ears ring 24/7. If not a suppressor, some molded adaptive hearing protection would be a great investment.

And maybe you already have this covered. But anytime I read that a young person is being set up with a brake, I just hope he isn't trading long term hearing damage for short term recoil mitigation.
He always wears ear protection. We use the molded Decibulz and I make him wear muffs over those. Even when hunting. I have severe hearing loss with significant tinnitus in both ears.

If your rifle likes them you won't be disappointed with the Barnes 130 until far enough out that lack of bc becomes an issue. One of mine loves them and it turns them into a mild mannered pussycat.
They are moving fast enough that you don't have to push them hard to make them perform.
A fun plus about them is if you have any 270 loving friends you can run them over a chronograph and compare velocity.- kinda hurts their feelings but you don't ever have to listen again to how much better their 270 is 🤣

I'm gonna give this a try for something to do since we have to use non lead here. in Kalifornistan

I have not played with them in 30 caliber. Used them in a 338 that just didn't want to shoot under 1 1/2 ---2 moa. Less than a box of them later and it was under 3/4 for 3-5 shots.
My 30/06 that I run copper in I went up to 165 Barnes. The 130s are great in it and all you need for deer. I went up in weight for more penetration in the big stuff and higher bc.

Handling recoil is different than being able to stay in the scope to spot shots and being able to shoot better.

That said, I am done with recoil and especially any rifle without suppressor. I got a newly issued man card with an asterisk…
Real talk… does spotting the impact change where the bullet goes? Or is all that predetermined by your alignment and trigger control?

I just saw that they made the 160g hammer hunters specifically for the 1/11 twist in tikka barrels. I might try those at some point if I ever get enthusiastic about loading ammo again.
That's how I'm feeling these days. If I don't have to load it, I'm not going to. I'm working to get to the point that if it's not a match gun, factory ammo gets shot in it.

No, spotting the shot does not cause change to where the bullet impacts.

But, the same thing that affects spotting the shot is the same thing that affects group size. Recoil management by proper form, support and alignment change where a bullet goes by directing/controlling rifle movement in a consistent manner.

As does any movement we make, like clean trigger presses with no flinch.

Among many things.

I’m not quite ready to start buying factory ammo, I just have not had any motivation to sit down at my press for several hours to prep brass and load.

I guess maybe I should chip away at it and maybe just prep and prime a batch of brass every few days. Then loading them up isn’t a big deal.

I haven't comitted to that but with work and kids, I seem to have to decide between loading and shooting and a normal time or stay up late to load so I can shoot. I load on a Hornady AP Press mostly. With powders that meter well like Ramshot Hunter or CFE223, the powder measure throws very accurately and smoothly. I also only have access to two ranges right now. A 100 yard, shoot through tubes, range and a 300 yard range that is run like a military range. I miss going out to BLM land, shooting, cleaning up, and leaving.

I only have a 200yd range so if I want to shoot longer I need to go to the mountains which is great but not always convenient. Short days, -10 right now, wind gusts 50 mph. I guess now is when I should be loading.
