I have a brake on my 270wsm. Feels like shooting a 243. I’ll be putting a brake on my 270 model 70 when I get a new stock for it.

Please make sure he understands the need for ear protection when hunting. Even just a shot or two from a braked rifle can lead to permanent hearing damage or ringing. It's a reality I'm all too familiar with.

It's all fine and dandy to be tough until your ears ring 24/7. If not a suppressor, some molded adaptive hearing protection would be a great investment.

And maybe you already have this covered. But anytime I read that a young person is being set up with a brake, I just hope he isn't trading long term hearing damage for short term recoil mitigation.

My 30-06 is a tikka with the barrel cut back, I shoot it suppressed, it’s great.

I’ve been contemplating rebarreling the Ruger M77. Maybe even having a stock with a real recoil pad made for it. Just can’t decide if it’s worth the money or just hold onto it and passing it down.

It would be stupid for guys to shoot short cartridges in a 30-06 length action. Super dumb, who would ever do that? Dummies I guess. Idiots. Imagine a 223 in a long action like that. It would never sell. lol

Funny this came up. When I was looking a rifle for my son because he was recoil shy, we landed on the 6.5 Creedmoor. I liked the lack of recoil compared to the 06 that I bought one. Every year I have shot the 06 just to shoot it but the recoil always stopped me from taking it.

This year I decided to load some 150 ttsx just to see. l loaded 56gr of H4350 with a Fed 210. It a joy to shoot! I shot 8 in one sitting and was not sore! Most I could do before this was to shoot 3 before being sore. I have some more work to do on the load as I was getting horizontal stringing but all the ranges are closed for the winter here.

I am also toying with the idea of trying 130gr to see what it would be like.

I switched to factory 150ttsx from the 168, that round in my sako 85 finnlight and a softer recoil pad made a world of difference in felt recoil and accuracy. I also put on a Trijicon credo weighing 23oz which I believed helped as well, whole setup weighs around 8lb.

Muzzle rise is still there but more manageable. I can get back into sight picture fairy easily. Still debating having a directional brake installed.

Also been toying around with installing a negative comb carbon stock. But wrestling the idea of just putting that cash towards a weatherby 307 alpine st in 7BC.

It’s hard moving from the Sako action though.

270 guy here. Light copper bullets is not where you want to try that. Just according to Barnes data, the 270 is within 100fps of the -06 and the gain in BC carries 2000fps further by a scoche but we have the 139LRX in that weight class which carries the mail. I got a Ruger M77 Tang Safety 30-06 in trade. It shot well but I liked my Model 70 in .270 more so I sent it down the road for a fairly significant gain.

Yes there is always ways to adjust the numbers, but your average shooter hasn't run the numbers on all the options, all they seem to understand is speed and recoil.

Your average shooter doesn't handload either. I'm of the opinion that if you have a 30-06, you don't need a .270 and vice versa.

I have a m70 extreme weather that I hunted with a lot back ~ 10 years ago or so, I do t really use it much anymore, it’s sort of heavy, not threaded for a silencer etc but it’s stupid accurate with the loads I worked up for it ;
(200g partition and the 190g ABLR), I’ve loaned that gun out to several people since I stopped using it, it’s gotten half a dozen or so people their first moose.

I was thinking of going full fudd and re barreling it to 35 whelen or something but I just don’t know how much I’d shoot it. That’s sort of the rub with some of this gear, it holds some sort of an attachment, the resale values make it so it’s not really worth it etc. I suppose with the way the prices have climbed on the m70s I could probably make money on it. I’ve also thought hard about moving on from a few other rifles that don’t get used anymore I just worry that I’d want them back as soon as they were gone. That m70 extreme weather 30-06 though, I probably wouldn’t loose sleep over it.

I’ve been getting to the point where rifles and fly rods that don’t get used need to go. Proceeds go into the trip fund.

I don't own many center fire rifles. I am mostly a small bore shooter and squirrel hunter. Tried my hand at deer hunting this year. Mostly because I had the place to go and I enjoy eating them. I have a 1903 springfield that had been sporterized just for the occasion. That being said. I shot the rifle ok. I decided I wanted something more modern and I have plans to go out west some to hunt more exciting stuff next year. So I picked up a sako 85 black wolf in 300wm. Love the rifle. Heavy tho. Hopefully not too bad heavy. I can shoot it much better and the crazy thing is the recoil doesn't bother me like the 1903 did. Going to be interesting to see how long it takes for me to come up with some excuse for needing another rifle. The sako 90 quest, the peak, and the finnlight already have caught my eye.

No. I just know that claiming dry fly fishing as being superior and the 30-06 as being inferior will really rustle panties on the internet.

Now I will admit that there is not a single enjoyable thing about shooting my tang safety Ruger M77 -06. That hockey puck of a recoil pad is flat out miserable.

It always cracks me up when I read through stuff here and people list long action as a negative….bro, monst people here shoot tikkas and tons of people are shooting 223s and 243s etc in them.

It’s always seems like the lamest negative listed on rokslide. Like seriously bro…you think you’re good at shooting but pulling a bolt back 1/2” farther will mess you up??? You probably aren’t as good at shooting as you think you are. I don’t think I’ve ever been like “dang!!! That bolt pull was waaaay too long”….and “man, this gun is so heavy, my trip would have been successful if I’d saved weight by getting a short action”….

It’s amazing that you can’t imagine anybody buying a 30-06, the market and demand for them has not slowed down. In fact, last time I was in cabelas a guy was buying one and the counter guy was explaining they only had a few choices because they get sold as fast as they arrive.

Rokside simply is not representative of the hunting community, and probably 25% of people on rokslide actually hunt more than white tails from trees and blinds.

I get that it’s easy to get wrapped up in rokslide and start thinking that the discussions here are common in the hunting community, but that isn’t the case.

I know a lot of guys that hunt and hardly any are on here.
I would say 1 out of 40.
In Oklahoma 30/06 is heavily used and I think will always be a favorite.

My daughter has taken possession of my beloved 1957 BRNO ZG47 30/06. It simply hasn’t failed anyone in its nearly 70 seasons.

Same, the 30-06 is incredibly common here in AK, people use it for everything. I think I know like 5 rokslide here in AK but probably ~30 people who use the 30-06 and are not on rokslide.
