I was watching the episode where Rinella goes elk hunting with Jason Phelps from Phelps game calls.

Noticed that Jason had an empty holster on his hip the entire time.

Anyone know what’s up with that? I know that Rinella isn’t the biggest gun guy from prior comments.

It is a fact that Rinella is anti-gun and anti- 2A. All the animals on his show are darted and released after filming. The meat they cook is plant based medium purchased from California and Seattle and then made to look like meat. Just sayin'.

Steve: I agree in principle but Cherin is not the only entertainment group against gun ownership. Hollywood and pro-gun ownership just doesn't mix. If that is going to be your criteria for entertainment choices you might as well put your television in the dumpster. It's like trying to buy an iphone not made in China. No way.
I guess you could just download only Randy Newberg shows and Ted Nugent or Metallica music and feel good about not supporting anti-gun groups. I still like an occasional WWII or sword fighting movie.

I think if you go too deep on anything you will find some level of any organization that is anti something you like. Yeah, we can make choices not to support stuff we don't agree with, but you probably are just cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you like his show, watch it. If you don't, don't.

I find I watch the newest episodes once and they are sometimes interesting. It's hard to make them feel as new anymore, so it's a bit like the more you watch, the less you feel the need. It's on season 10 after all.

I do appreciate that he's willing to bring in people on his podcast with antagonistic views to his (including his brother), so I sometimes find more value in the podcast (although some of the podcasts lack any value).

His introspective style of narration combined with a reverence for wild things and wild places does wonders to bridge the divide between those who are pro and anti hunting. He has the ability to make a sensible argument about why we do what we do and has the medium to broadcast it. Just my 2 bits.

Right, I can agree with most people (like his brother) that feel like R3 is mostly wasted dollars at this point.

That being said, I am interested in someone who is pro gun/pro hunting being able to effectively communicate to non hunters why the vast majority of hunters responsible and ethical people, and the value hunting provides to both our families and communities.

I find all the Rinella hate very odd overall. It mostly reads like jealousy to be honest.

I left my bear spray holster on my bino harness all season after returning from grizzly country. I would post a picture but don’t want to trigger someone.

My guess is that Phelps didn’t see a need for a sidearm on that hunt, he was likely between his own hunts of the year (he hunts a lot of grizzly territory with a bow). Removing the holster from a Kifaru belt can be a pain, especially if you aren’t going to run a pouch in its place.

No idea on state/Rez regulations that could’ve impacted the choice.

Steve Rinella might be the most pro gun guy of the whole current MeatEater bunch, FWIW.

Hey Fitz: I'm confused by your comments directed at me. Apparently you are confused also.

My comment was regarding the general conflicting views of gun ownership rights and the entertainment industry.

I assume Newberg and Rinella are for private gun ownership but they are simply entertainers and squeezing every dollar they can out of the hunting industry.

Wasn't totally disagreeing with you LostArra. Was actually agreeing with you for the most part on the Hollywood/anti-gun thing. Alec Baldwin who has railed against gun ownership for years just killed that lady on set because he's an idiot who doesn't believe in people's right to own guns, but uses them in his movies as long as he is getting paid.

My only slight disagreement was just pointing out that if the guy doesn't like Meateater for using his status/platform/social media to put focus on hunting and public hunting specifically, that he most likely isn't going to be fond of what Randy and the guys at FreshTracks are doing either. I like Randy/FreshTracks, but would also argue that he has done more to increase participation in public land hunting than Meateater ever thought about. I haven't seen MeatEater putting out videos specifically telling people how to apply for public land tags lately. But Randy already has 3-4 released in the last month.
