looking for some ideas for diy breakfast. something besides just instant oatmeal.
Thinking adding some dehydrated milk, nuts ground up fairly fine, maybe some fruit? Ideas on bags that will hold up to hot water and a week in a pack?
always loved off grid but there not in business anymore

I like this combo.

1/2 cup of old fashioned oats
1 scoop Beverly International UMP Graham Cracker Protein Powder
1 tablespoon chia seeds
pinch of cinnamon powder
1/4 cup of trail mix - nut and berry type mix for me
Add a honey packet or two after adding water to it.

I make a bunch of these

1 packet oatmeal or 1/3 cup granola (Grape Nuts are my fav)
1/3 cup dried milk
1/4 cup dried cranberries

Place ingredients in a vacuum pouch and seal with only partial vacuum (otherwise ingredients will be hard as a rock)

Add 1 cup of water - hot or cold - eat right from pouch

I do something similar to the above.

Add a scoop or two of protein powder, some raisins, maybe a handful of crushed walnuts, and a scoop of chia/flax mix. I typically use the quick oats and put all into a quart sized freezer ziplock.

If I'm really low on the motivation index, my instant coffee goes right into the bag with the rest and I slurp it down. It's not awesome but gives me plenty of fuel for the morning.

The exo guys have a really good sounding breakfast suggestion somewhere in their podcast archive, and maybe in article form as well.

I basically make overnight oats with old fashioned oats, powdered milk, chia seeds, dried blueberries. Add my water and mix before going to sleep so I can eat as soon as I wake up and start hunting sooner….I only do this when going without a stove, it’s not my go to if I pack my stove.

Favorite backcountry meal other than fresh killed game steaks or caught fish. I’ve tweaked this over the years and finally found what works best for me…

.1 Cup heaping Granola (Flavored high calorie kind)
.1/4 cup crushed almonds or cashews
.1/4 cup raisins or cranberries
.1/4 cup heaping milk chocolate covered espresso beans
.1 heaping scoop protein powder
.2 pills worth ginseng/royal jelly powder (emptied from capsules)

Pour ingredients in a quart ziplock bag and seal. At breakfast time add some water and stir it up to make the protein your "milk".

Incredible early morning energy and boost. Espresso beans end up giving you about 75-100 mg of caffeine so I don't need coffee.

Oats grinded in a spice or coffee grinder, scoop of protein powder, shake in water and down the hatch.

If you are feeling like something savory, give grits a try. You can buy / order tons of flavors or brew your own.

my favorite is
- instant grits
- a gob of butter or some olive oil
- bacon crumbles or diced ham
- cheese shreds - i use percerino romano
- ground pepper

i am not a huge fan o sweet breakfasts so grits hits the spot for me.

I’m still tinkering but where I’m at in a few attempts
3/4 cup rolled oats
5tsp brown sugar
2tbsp dried milk
1/4 cup pecan pieces

Waiting on some protein powder to show up

If you don't have a vacuum sealer, I pack almost all of my meals in freezer ziplock bags and have never had an issue with hot water in them. I can't speak to the non-freezer type.

EXO podcast posted one from a listener, its pretty solid and satiating. A full batch is filling and 800-900cal, a half batch works well for a common camping trip needing a quick breakfast that isn't as calorie demanding. I ordered the powders but just buy the rest locally.

EDIT: I just add enough water to dissolve the powders when I eat it, if you wanted to you could eat it soupier I'm sure.

I do 1 cup oats
3tbs hemp heart seeds
1 tbs dried butter
1tbs dried whole milk
1/4 cup freeze dried strawberries
1/4 cup freeze dried blueberries
Big spoonful of honey
Spoonful of cacao powder
Packet of coconut oil

Combo is a half pound in a Mylar bag and gives you 1000 calories. I find by lunch I’m still not hungry. Was more calories (170) with a scoop of protein but too pasty of a texture for me and the Mylar bag is already tight for room. Might add peanut butter powder this year.

I’m gonna try this in the morn. Do you have a rough idea how much water you put in? I was gonna try about 4oz first time.

I just splash some water in and stir and if the powders liquify its fine for me, if you like it soupier feel free to add more liquid. If I was guessing I'm only adding 1-2oz of water. Its not overly critical in my opinion, just something to liquify the powder and drink the excess afterwards if needed.

@slim23 Hoping to contribute to the great ideas other has already given you here...

I've found taking the oats, protein powder, dry fruit, cinnamon, etc. and mixing it really well in the baggie before adding water helps substantially in ensuring the protein powder mixes evenly in the water without a ton of clumps.

My favorite is oats, dried apples/raisins, 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder, and a gigantic scoop of cinnamon.

Good luck this season!
