Dire Wolf de-extinction

Waiting for the "my kifaru broke and now they won't warranty it because I hauled an Irish elk out" thread

Two questions. Number one is why not bring back the T-Rex? And number two is when can I start accumulating preference points for a tag?

Everybody thinks our ancestors hunted mammoths with atlatls and spears, but those in the know believe they had the wet work done by visiting aliens with ray guns and traded them super authentic bead necklaces for it. That or they took them on guided trips to hunt neighboring tribesmen. (“Predator” is historically accurate) Not only plausible, but likely is what I’m sayin’.

Also autistic kids are telepathic.

Who do we sue first when one of these freaks gets loose and kills someone, perhaps Freaky Fauchi and his Chinese associates has a hand in this.

Think of the possibilities like hunting them and before pulling the trigger saying, "Things are looking...dire." Did I just convince hunting influencers to back this de-extinction?

Saw this and had to post it. There's a decent argument to be made that using grey wolf DNA as a starting point isn't even how best to achieve a dire wolf phenotype anyway. Grey wolves are the closest phylogenetic ancestor to dire wolves but a direwolf phenotype may have more closely resembled jackals or african wild dogs (via convergent evolution).

WYFG never misses an opportunity to generate rev from PP. I am sure they will have Mammoth PP available to purchase in '26.

I fought through the Rogan podcast with their CEO. There’s two things that worry me about this.

1.) The tech bro CEO is hook line and sinker bought in on rewilding. He parroted the bull about wolves rerouting rivers in Yellowstone, and Rogan didn’t push him on the bull. He doubled down with something to the affect “predators balance the landscape”. They don’t, ask anyone that lives around predators that have been reintroduced. A county in NM just declared a state of emergency for the depredation from Mexican wolves on livestock and pets. Cops are guarding school play grounds. By the tech bros admission, they’ve got CIA backing; nothing is going to stop them from doing what they want. These GMO predators will end up back on the landscape at some point, with even more arbitrary protection than what we’ve already seen.

2.) I see a Monsanto-ish scenario playing out once these GMO animals hit the landscape. The company owns the genetic code, and anything else with that code, they also own. Whatever they release will interbreed with other animals of the same lineage, and then everything will have that arbitrary protection. It’ll be backed by the private equity and shadow government that’s bankrolled the project. If you think getting predators delisted is hard now, just wait.

We were all kinda having fun until this…. Debbie Downer. Whauhhh whauhhh…

Since we’re doomspewing now, the population of humans on the planet has almost tripled in my lifetime. At this rate we’ll be eating each other by 2060. Since there is no animal more dangerous than a scared or hungry human, dire wolves labaradires and diredoodles don’t stand a chance. They will all end up on the barby in short order. Fortunately for me I’ll be dead by then.

We now return to your regular programming. Somebody please post a hilarious meme.

Human population growth has drastically slowed. The powers to be are actively trying to turn it around to population decrease, not my words, theirs’.

Anyway, I just don’t see the good that can come from this. There’s a reason those animals aren’t here anymore, nature, or whoever you pray to, selected them out. Pretending to ever know the downstream consequences of bringing back extinct species is beyond idiotic. The vast majority of the human caused introductions of living animals all have negative ecological consequences.

I'm hoping they make a Short Faced Bear. A 1500lb bear that runs 40mph would be amazing. We could reintroduce it to California.

I've been wondering what predator could run fast enough to drive the evolution of antelope running speeds. You might have just answered it.
