We are camped at a spot we can leave the target and rifle set up. This morning and this evening I missed twice and then hit 3 in a row at 600. It seems like I need those first couple shots to settle down and actually squeeze the trigger.

This challenge has already had a good impact on me. Gonna be bringing the rifle along all summer I think.

Yup, wind is brutal and a REAL factor in determining your MER.
This is a 10 inch gong at 1070 yards. We like to have a rock face behind it so you/spotter can see your impacts and make your adjustments. In this instance, you can see the impacts all around the plate as the wind was anywhere from 5 to 15 mph and it would change literally by the second.signal-2023-05-28-17-32-23-448.jpg
Frustrating as hell but absolute great practice.

That's cool. What equipment?

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy 10, Phoneskope, and Vortex Razor. If I get in on the contest I will use my Kowa I think.

Yesterday was my first day filming shots and it didn't go as well as I had hoped.
Uploaded fine. Flip your camera horizontal if you want us to be able to see full screen.

Shot a few at 375 and 400 today to validate the Hornady 4DOF app. Needed to add .1Mil and also make sure I'm not pushing into the stock with my cheek too much as I find myself hitting left.

Prone off the pack w/ a rear bag

Seated - This tree is at 375. Have another one at 393 and need to figure out how to do this at 400 by next weekend!

High shot is 3.5" above point of aim. The one on the right would be close as I'd need to add 25 yards for the challenge!

One on steel to end the day from the seated position.

Will probably move the steel in front of the backboard for the challenge so I can see where I hit if I miss. Hope I didn't use up all my good shots today! Also had pretty light wind (guesstimated at 5mph variable) which helped!

Very realistic shooting position right there.

(There’s been a few times on the mountain that I look like I’m shooting from a garage sale—Pack, tripod, coat, stick. and a glove thrown in for good measure.)

Looks like you’re ready for Saturday. Good luck man. Hope the wind holds for you.

Well I got to admit this may be more of a challenge then I thought.

Using my 6.5 as my 300 is tore down getting nitride.
I set my zero and went to 608 and barely nicked the side of an 18" wide plate.

I didn't think there was enough wind to matter. But heck I was wrong.
Ended up having to double my wind call from .2 to .4

Question

Let’s say my MER is 800 yards. Setup scenario:

Day 1: I shoot 1 cold bore shot at 600yds. If I impact my 10” circle target then post it.

Day 2: I shoot 1 cold bore shot at 800yds. If successful and impact my 10” circle target then I post it and have acquired 2 points.

Day 3: repeat day 1 and post

Day 4: repeat day 2, post and then I am done and have acquired 4 points.

Is this right?

Asking for a friend, 🤣🤣🤣

From the rules on the challenge page -
5) If you believe your MER is over 600 yards, you will need to qualify to shoot farther by first hitting the target between 575 and 625 yards per the rules above both times. If you are able to hit both of the first two shots, you get to move out to your MER beyond 600 and shoot two additional days at that range. The same rules apply here as in rules 3 and 4 above.

Thanks for asking but not quite right. See what @Mountainrancher and @Harvey_NW said above this post. Make sense?

I did a little shooting this morning. First I stopped and shot at 100 yards on paper as I just put new scopes on my 270 WSM and my boys 6.5 Creedmoor. I also had some load testing to do with a little Howa .223 Ackley.

My rifle:
270 WSM
Remington 700 PTG Bolt
Benchmark 1-9 twist 28" barrel
Stocky's Carbon stock
SWFA 5-20x50

Load:
170 Berger EOL
Norma Brass
Rem 9-1/2 primer
Retumbo
3050 fps

I got my 270 zero'd. This load is a known load so that one didn't take many shots. I think I was zero'd with 3 or 4.
20230530_085325.jpg

Quade's Rifle:
6.5 Creedmoor
Savage Model 10 Factory
SWFA 6x
Form 1 Suppressor

Load:
My boys 6.5 creed is shooting factory ammo currently. His late grandpa had a lot of the Hornady American Gunner 140 BTHP rounds so that is what he is shooting til they are gone. I also shot it over the Magnetospeed to verify velocity. Interestingly it averaged 2689 fps over 5 shots and the box reads 2690.

20230530_085200.jpg

After shooting at 100 I loaded up and went up the hill to my shooting spot. I forgot my bipod today so I shot off the bench. I know this is not hunting conditions shooting but its what I did today.

First up was my 270 WSM at 623 yards. I was on top of a little ridge. Wind was coming from behind me in a slight right to left direction at 10-11 mph. I dialed 2.8 up and held the .4 mils for wind and my first shot hit where the center of the crosshairs were, not where my wind hold was. I abandoned the wind hold and the second and third shots were in the 10" circle. The wind was blowing where I was at. I was shooting across a little bowl and I am thinking it was a little more protected from the wind or the topography is making the wind change direction and it was blowing straight to the target through more of the bullet flight. I am not sure, I didn't go to the target to see what the wind was doing there.

SmartSelect_20230530_083518_Shooter.jpg

Next was my boys 6.5 Creedmoor. Knowing the wind hold wasn't needed I dialed the 4.1 mils and held in the middle. I put 2 in the 10 inch circle with his and 1 outside it that I pulled a bit.
SmartSelect_20230530_102846_Shooter.jpg

4 impacts in the 10" circle. 2 impacts on the right edge of the target.

20230530_085857.jpg

Then I took his to the 513 yard target and put 2 in the 10 inch circle. I grabbed my 270 WSM and put one in the circle on top of one of the hits from the creedmoor.
20230530_085636.jpgThe center black mark is the hole through the disc, not a bullet impact.

It was good to go shoot. The wind had picked up quite a bit from when I started shooting at 100 and when I shot steel. If this was the start day of the challenge I would not have qualified for the over 600 MER as I didn't make that first shot count.

I also didn't take my spotter and phone adapter. I was taking pics holding my phone up to my binos that were sitting on the front bag. Terrible pics but I made do today.

They lock a lot of the gates around here to prevent damage outside of popular hunting season(deer, bear, and turkey). Too many people pay no mind to the roads, they go wherever they can. Area is still open, most are open to foot, horse, or bicycle, just closed to vehicles because of repeat offenders who ruin it for everyone.

Also use to have huge parties take place on NF, helps to prevent some of those.
I talked to the FS. They close it every year after turkey season and reopen mid-July. So I guess I’m SOL or riding a bike with all my gear. We will see if I can make this work out.

I went out to the rifle range on the weekend to zero my 308 Win for the cold bore challenge. I think the scope died, as it was acting very flaky when I was trying to get the zero worked out. I stole a scope off another rifle I had along with me, so think I have it sorted now.

My son took some video of me verifying my dial on our steel gong once I got the rifle shooting with the replacement scope. Just thought I would post it here as a warm-up. This pair of gongs was placed at 425 meters (464 yards). The large target is just under 12". I will mark a 10" circle for the challenge. Just for reference (in case anyone is wondering), the small gong is around 4". All the pre-existing hits on both gongs were from my son practicing PRS skills stage 2 with his 6 Creed match rifle.

The below photo was taken by my son while I was down range picking up my gongs during a cease fire at the range. Gives a bit of an idea of where I usually practice. The red circle is me at 425 meters. My white pick up is just to the left of the circle. All the equipment in the foreground is ours from the mornings practice.

This challenge will show us 2 things. First, already shown, roksliders suck at reading comprehension (not excluding myself here). 😂

Second, I think we might open some eyes to long range shooting and how difficult it actually is to score first round hits! Not hard to walk a shot in and after 2-3 shots start banging steel consistently.

More than likely be closed til bear hound "training" season.

More aptly the bear thinning season as its pretty hard on first year cubs, but be damned if the commission will listen to its biologists, they just listen to the Bear Hunters Association.

Brand new build trying to get my dope down and make sure my zero is nailed. Really running out of time but I’m hoping to give it a go.

My plan this year for the long area(bean field) I have was to actually shoot my heavy field comp rifle since I live in the east where I don’t have to pack it far. But, In the spirit of why not I’m gonna use the shorty 16” creedmoor instead and go for that 600 gong.View attachment 558120

Wind yesterday was a little spicey for out east but managed a first rounder on 10” at 600 line, though I did a 10 shot zero confirm before heading to the long line so it’s not cold bore.

Good day for wind practice

How do you get the video to upload from imgur? I've tried every code and also [ MEDIA=imgur ] [ /MEDIA ] w/ no luck... Keep getting an "imgur refused to connect" error.
