So how many Roksliders travel to their hunting spot with a pistol (for the two-legged threats) but leave it in their vehicle while they scout and/or hunt?

I didn't either until I did have an up close and personal experience with confirmed MS-13 members coming North a few years ago. I was very happy to have been armed with both a rifle and a pistol.

Yeah, the rifle works really well, if it's ever called upon. My outfitter has a shotgun laying around, just in case. But neither of us pack a pistol when were in the 30's and 40's units.

I've had good luck with Blackhawk holsters, they make some inexpensive cordura jobs that fit nicely on my packs waist belt. Have one on each pack so I don't have to move them around. Don't sweat bears too much in CO, but I've had some close encounters with lions and moose that have had me looking over my shoulder for the rest of the day. There are lots of shady backcountry operations going on here, haven't run into a live one, but have stumbled into abandoned camps with water lines, etc. dug in miles and miles into the backcountry. Always carry. Think of it as training with weight on...

I wear a chest holster and bring bear spray for hunting in Montana. I personally wouldn’t pack a pistol if I was hunting in Colorado. I’d probably just opt for the bear spray to minimize weight.

I'd ask "Why wouldn't you"?? Like a Leatherman or pocket knife it's a tool. I may have to euthanize one of my dogs, your dog, I may shoot your dog off my dogs if I cannot separate them.

Euthanize other critters. Protect myself. My wife. You....

Been in Law Enforcement for 25+ years. Just do. Almost none of it has to do with bears.

I've hunted a lot in CO and always carried a Glock G20. I had a bear charge at me and stopped it by popping a round into the ground ahead of him. Also used it as a noise maker a couple times with bears that didn't fear me and were acting curious. I was also followed by a Mt Lion once. When getting stalked, the difference in how you feel when you have the means to put it in the ground if needed vs nothing is immense.

I wonder sometimes if the people who don't bring a gun just have false confidence because they haven't had anything happen to be worried about.

I typically scout with my daughters, that are young so I don’t carry and never have in CO. As they get older I may just for continued safe firearms education.
