Thank you! Always heard good stuff about Papa Bears so I reached out but I have a feeling it’s gonna be out of our budget sadly.

After sleeping on it , I would skip Alaska DiY float trip ( you definitely won’t be the only people on the drainage if you hire a contractor to supply the raft and tent)
Canadian moose are cheaper and more comfortable and successful

Give Willie Dvorak a call with Jim River Guide Service. He offers DIY moose hunts out of Illiamna. He supplies transport to and from the field and the camp. We used him last year and were very satisfied

Thank you, will do!

Well, the plan would be to rent the rafts in town, not have them supplied by a hunt transporter. And I have a tent. Thanks.

The Strahan book mentioned here has river profiles and there are some choices that wouldn't require a transporter. Not going to blast out any of those locations here, but there are budget friendly hunts you could do. You will see other hunters on any road accessible float/atv/hike-in areas, but Alaska is still a very big place.

Research some units that have higher success rates, break down some drainages you are interested in, and call the local biologist for more intel.

Sweet, thanks man! Will do!

In the process of planning this exact hunt with my dad and two friends for Sept 2026. DIY Float hunt. Pilot lined up for drop off and pickup. I'll try to remember to provide any relevant feedback when I get back.

Any recommendations for Canadian out fitters?

Your going to love it. I did it 3 times but lake drops and a raft to move meat or camp around. Here's a start, out of Dillingham. You will go back.

Damn shame how things have gotten. I did a DIY float with Rob Kincaide back in the mid 2010’s and I think it was like 4500 a person or so. Great hunt too.

I’ll tell you this: the situation is more than likely only going to be worse (all public land hunting is) so you might as well go. Nobody is going to help you pick a spot and they definitely shouldn’t either. People get all pissy when they don’t get a handout but you aren’t special and the collective effective of helping is what got us here now. Loving each other to death, I suppose.

Do your research on general areas then try and find a transporter. You are going to have focus more on finding anybody to take you somewhere than you are on a specific spot first. Good luck.

Do it, it won't be easy and you will find some challenges. .
I have done moose float hunts and just remote floats. Look at the pages for companies that just do remote floats, it will give you an idea of gear and price. rent gear or ship gear, both have the pro's and con's. I have done both. renting gear, your done after the float, using your own gear plan on extra days just to get your gear dried out and ready to ship back. just one of the many challenges you will face.
