Tormenting an animal prior to killing it is small town entertainment?
It used to be. I mean, it wasn't THAT long ago that a common village entertainment was to capture a bear, chain it to a pole, and set dogs on it. And dog fighting was only outlawed US-wide in 1976 - that's after I was born.

Bear baiting has been outlawed in the US and most of Europe for a century, but believe it or not it's STILL legal in South Carolina today. You won't see that in downtown Greenville - the folks who did are/were mostly hunters training dogs. My understanding is this was even outlawed in 2013 but only through a back door rule prohibiting "private ownership" of bears, and you just KNOW there's some guy (in my head his name is Cleetus) somewhere in the woods who still does it... :)

On the list of things that I find to be offended or turned off by, this incident isn’t evened on the first few pages.

When some hunters think this is ok, they are part of the problem the rest of us have to live with.

You want non hunters to vote favorably to help keep land, guns and seasons intact, but then make a TicTok challenge to tape up wolves then shoot them - if those two things don’t seem contradictory then there’s nothing we can say that will change a person.

Had this happened many jurisdictions it would be felony animal abuse.

Well, my hunting hero as a youngster was Peter Hathaway Capstick. Still is, really. And way before woke, he seemed to opine that what makes Africa worthwhile is that things there try to eat you.

Here's to things in the Northern Rockies that try to eat me.

As mentioned, I support wolf hunting seasons, I believe it's a good thing to kill some wolves, and I don't agree with the anti-wolf crowd.
There is truth in hunting where the wild things are. And I have no value for people that get enjoyment out of this, but get frustrated that the same people riled about this could give a crap when the same or worse happens to people. This idea of animals = people or animals > people is evolving so fast and is such a threat that I have no interest in throwing the book at this idiot.

Yep, this is well put. Human life is precious and sacred.

Animals ought not be treated with cruelty, but they're not the same as us in regards to value of an individual life.

There are so many people who have this backwards, and even if they wouldn't say it outright, their logic and actions show that they value animal life above human life. They contradict themselves with their definition of life itself. Criminalizing the destruction of turtle or eagle eggs?

Anyways, I'm stepping down from my soapbox. Give the "wolf in a bar" guy a hefty fine.

some of you guys have such pure hearts. It’s really sweet.

Go watch guys run coyotes with grey hounds then circle back to this thread. 😂
I'm hardly as sensitive, naive, or "pure" or "sweet" as you might suspect from my previous posts. My father, uncles, and grandfather used to make coons jump from the tree onto/into the dogs to watch the fight. This was done by shooting at the branches under the coon's feet with a .22 until he jumped. They referred to it as, "Walkin' him out on the dawgs."

Things change, huh?

He was stupid in public. He's been cited. Hopefully he's learned a lesson.

Look up Jack Abernathy and his boys. As Louis L’Amour would say, “Men with the bark on “.

They still haven't found the silver bullet!

I don't hunt coyotes, I don't think I ever could. Same with wolves. I have zero issues with what this person allegedly did because I recognize if I take that stance, I also have to take issue with oodles of other hunting/fishing/trapping/dog training scenarios.

Trap some pigeons, drag them, pin them in a launcher, fling and shoot...

Rattlesnake roundups...

@Ucsdryder is spot on with greyhounds and coyotes...

If he broke a law for possessing a live wolf, whatever, so be it. Beyond that, I think every hunter needs to say he did nothing wrong or else they are icing up that slippery slope.

Yep. By complaining about it we're actually fueling their fire with more support and ammo. Best thing to do is tell them to ingest a satchel of Richards and go away. WFG issues a citation already, case closed none of their business.

“One source who spoke to Cowboy State Daily said the worry is that such an act of alleged animal cruelty could turn the tide of nationwide public sentiment against Wyoming’s wolf policy.”
—LOL that tide turned a while back now.

“When this story gets out, and it will, this is going to drastically change the discussion about wolf management in Wyoming,” the source said.”
—I doubt it. Have you met Wyoming?

I guess I won't have to read about ole Muley freak on here anymore either, since public commentary stops once the almighty F&G makes a decision.

Can't say that'll break my heart.

The anti-predator hunting crew considers any killing of wolves as an tragedy. Are they any more offended by this than killing than typical trapping or hunting? I'm sure they are excited that their PR machine has grist for its mill.

I like how Ucsdryder put it above, but I'd edit a bit... put me in the not horrified category, but wouldn’t do it category.
