I’ll bite, what am I missing?
PRC chambers are sized in such a way that resizing brass after they've been fired causes clicking when lifting the bolt. There are custom reamers that fix the issue, but for whatever reason Hornady didn't fix it in the 7 prc. The fix is pretty simple, some guys do it themselves. Google PRC clicker issue to get a more specific description and videos of the issue.

I disagree.
Modern cartridges and the rifles with barrel twist suitable to shoot them(not to mention modern manufacturing to much tighter tolerances) are creating a new world of shooter (I'll throw gas on the fire by not saying 'hunter').
!
So what does the 7Prc offer over a 7RUM, 7mm Rem mag, .280ai, 7 Weatherby mag, or 7 SAUM? Any will kill to 1000 yds.
We are not speaking of barrel twists or better made rifles, we are addressing the new "cartridge of the week".
Any of the above can be improved upon with a good barrel with the correct twist without reinventing the wheel.

Wouldn't that just be a 257 weatherby?

Sans belt and radius shoulder yes. Same same
Suppose you could use a 1:7 and toss berger 133s quite fast

Although possibly unjustified, the extra 32 grains in bullet weight and 0.02” in bullet diameter for the 7mm PRC would make me feel better on a longer shot at an elk.
Uh huh
Ive killed a few bulls with a 6.5 saum and it's noticeable how much better a 180 puts them down at longer ranges.
People get super hung up on the ballistic numbers and ignore the other properties of usung bigger heavier bullets.
These are the guys I can instantly tell don't have much experience putting down bulls at long range

Christensen arms have begun offering rifles in 6.8 western and many custom rifle and barrel makers have been offering it for a while. Federal is also rumored to be releasing a heavy for caliber 27 version of their terminal ascent bullet which may lead to factory loadings from them. So it’s not been completely ignored by the rest of the industry. It’s really going to comedown to the 7 prc avoiding the problem the 6.8 had when it released. Tons of ammo on the shelf but no rifles anywhere chambered in it. If it can avoid that it will be a big success I imagine.
Christensen is chambering the 7 PRC now too. Just got an email promoting it.

A Ridgeline FFT in 7 PRC with 22" barrel might be a great lightweight option for factory ammo shooter.

The 6.8 Western never really had a chance. .277 is an enthusiast caliber at best anyway and it still just hasn’t caught on like the others and honestly I don’t think it ever will.

Bingo
Sad to think they could have beat hornady to the punch by spinning up an "improved " 7 wsm with an 8 twist

Please provide more info.

One person said "longer range" without specifying exactly what distance that is. You call out "long range" without stating what that distance is. Ask a guy in the midwest what long distance is and it could be 150 yards; ask a guy in WY and it could be 900. Details matter.

You claim the superiority of 180 grain bullet but don't provide more info. So a 308 Win shooting 180 gr bullet is better at killing bulls at "long range" (your unspecified distance) than your 6.5 SAUM or 26 Nosler lobbying a 156 gr Berger? Or is there more to it than what you threw up in your post "pooping" on others?

Christensen Arms, Fierce, and Seekins all offering 6.8W now. So - not true browning and Winchester only factory. Of the “standard” factory guys, I saw savage , ruger, mossberg offering 7prc. Personally I prefer Browning/Win to those. In any case the 7PRC is a long action and more powerful round than 6.8. It will also have significantly more recoil. Despite marketing claims, recoil will be on par or higher than 300 Win mag factory loads. A 180 at 2975 kicks same or hair more than one at 2960

That being said, it looks like a great round. However in a light weight hunting rifle, particularly one I would want a can on I would far prefer a 6.8W or 6.5 PRC unless I just really needed the added performance of a heavier round

Dont underestimate us 270 fans. We are loyal:). Seriously, from a hunting perspective the old 270 win has stomped all 7mms except the 7mm Rem Mag. The 270 has been a top 5 cartridge in terms of sales for many years and is just dropped down out with 6.5 cm moving up. However, still ahead of 7mm rem mag. One or 2 years of a round in the spotlight does not erase the last 100 years of popularity.

I would say down the road the 270 may gradually slide, however, the new military round that replaced the 223 is a .277. I would expect that to significantly boost the calibers popularity given past history. So, far from a “niche” caliber

How will either of those calibers do for elk size game with factory ammo in a 20” barrel to 700 yards?

I’m not sure what numbers to run.
hill country rifles YT channel just did a "shoot out" of different barrel lengths out past 1k yards.

Ive got an extra Howa 1500 long action in 270 sitting idle. The current plan was to convert to CF barrel and stock and rechamber in 280AI. Now I realize that I can easily convert to 7 PRC if I can pick up a magnum bolt for it when I rebarrel. Who is the go to vendor for Howa magnum bolts?
Thanks,
Brian

E bay or howa direct if your standard bolt can't be opened up. Potentially a gunsmith could open your bolt face and your good to go.
