7prc just slayed the 6.8 Western

Serious question, what was the last really successful rifle cartridge that Hornady didn't develop? Does 6.5 Grendel count?

Remington - no new cartridges in at least a decade,
Sierra - don't spend much on bullet R&D much less try develop the cartridges.
Nosler - barely made a dent in the market with their barrel burners
Sig - 277 Fury will not be a big success unless it can be safely fired at full pressure from popular bolt actions. If it can, it has a real chance. If not, I doubt other rifle makers will support it.
Winchester - the 6.8 looks like a good design, but other major rifle makers refused to support their competition.

Because it doesn't make rifles, Hornady has a huge advantage,

You can re-barrel any bolt action you want to 277 fury. It's less stress on the action than any magnum bolt face cartridge.

Agree on hornady. I have been an interock fan way before all the new stuff. They have dropped some stinkers like the 300 rcm, marlin express, etc. However they do know how to do a rollout

Im curious on the 277 sig fury as well. They have a few “non high pressure” loads that are standard brass case. The 80k round is the hybrid case with steel case head. Maybe that steel head alleviates the need for anything extra as I have always heard the brass is weak link. I have also heard sig is going to do a series of fury rounds starting with 6.5 next though not sure how true that is

It is nothing special without the high pressure rounds.

$42 for a soft point?
130g at 2700 fps

129g at 2800fps

So what does the 7Prc offer over a 7RUM, 7mm Rem mag, .280ai, 7 Weatherby mag, or 7 SAUM? Any will kill to 1000 yds.
We are not speaking of barrel twists or better made rifles, we are addressing the new "cartridge of the week".
Any of the above can be improved upon with a good barrel with the correct twist without reinventing the wheel.

Not in a factory rifle with a SAMMI chambering. It is very hard to modify a sammi approved round after it has been launched. And selling ammo/barrel twists that aren’t SAMMI standard is a risk most manufacturers will not take. It’s just not a viable path. The only viable path for a factory option is to come out with a “new” cartridge with correct specs for brass, pressure, bullets, throating, and barrel twists.

Uh huh
Ive killed a few bulls with a 6.5 saum and it's noticeable how much better a 180 puts them down at longer ranges.
People get super hung up on the ballistic numbers and ignore the other properties of usung bigger heavier bullets.
These are the guys I can instantly tell don't have much experience putting down bulls at long range

Can you please give more details? How many “bulls” have you killed with 6.5’s at what exact ranges and what were the impact locations and reaction of the bulls? And, how many bulls have you killed with 7mm 180gr bullets, what were the exact ranges, impact locations, and reactions of the bulls? Please be specific.

I also get the impression that the 6.8 W is getting nosed backwards by the PRC's of Hornady. Lots of hype already. I have a 6.8 and I absolutely love it. It's a great all around western long range gun that my kids can easily shoot too. I shot a cow at 40yds last year and my son shot a bull at 500yds a couple weeks ago. I've taken multiple pronghorn, mulies and elk with no major meat loss or blood trailing. I have no plans of trading my 6.8 for a PRC unless sierra stops making 175gr TGKs.

I don’t jump on the hype train often, but I’m excited for the 7prc. I’d like to see some real world 20” numbers before I order up a new barrel.

.300 Blackout is the most recent big winner I can think of with no Hornady involvement.
