.25 Cal (Quarter Bore) / Big Game Success - 25 Creed, 25-284, 25-06, 25 PRC, 25 SAUM

I've posted the stats on this thread before but I'll refresh..

25-284 tikka build
21" Preffered barrel
133 berger elite hunter going 2945fps mv
54 grains h1000

Shot distance of 575 yards >30 degree angle, impact velocity of ~2287fps

1st shot: broadside low lung and heart, bull locked up then started a very slow walk after 3 seconds or so. No exit.

2nd shot: quartering away hard and at an upward angle (more like I was alot higher elevation), animal wobbled and turned sideways after impact, no exit.

3rd shot: broadside high lung, dropped upon impact, no exit.

Lungs and innards were all a mess, bullet/bone fragmentation on 3rd shot broke spine. I didn't open up because 2nd shot went through guts on the way to the chest cavity.

This is my 4th "small" caliber kill, the 2nd in recent years since hearing @Formidilosus and others' experiences. All 4 kills had a few things in common:
Spotted my own impacts,
Quick follow up shots (more bullets impacting target),
Quick expiration

Thanks to @Tcmo-33 for the ranging and packing.

25 SST 133 Berger at 3150 fps MV, took my caribou inside 100 yards. Blew some lung out the offside, hole the size of a golf ball or so. You know what the inside looked like. Went 10 yards.

Shot it suppressed and a heck of a meat thump and saw it in the scope down at 3.6 power.

Is there a compelling reason to go any route other than 25-06 with a fast twist blank?

MkV action if it matters. Brass life and availability matter far more to me than FPS.

Brass life and availability were 2 of several reasons I went with 284 parent case. 6.5-284 brass is plentiful and the sharp case shoulder holds up to reloads well.

My first fast twist was 25-06. I ended up necking down lapua 30-06 and then had to neck turn. Probably would have been fine just using hornady brass

If you're set on the 25-06 then make it an AI and cut back on your brass trimming which will help brass life and get a little more speed out of it while you're at it.

Otherwise brass availability is something to consider with the newer cartridges that are out. This is coming from a 257RobAI guy.

you can easily neck down .30-06 and .270 brass. I created around 250- .25-06 cases from once fired .30-06 with one pass through my Redding FL .25-06 sizing die. Measure and trim to desired length.

I will be ordering a 26" 1:7.5 in .25-06AI from Preferred Barrels shortly. In my Tikka, I was able to seat a dummy 134 ELDM out to 3.2605 without jamming in the action. PBB will be throating to provide the appropriate jump for this load.

Some day I may mill the inside of my Tikka action to maximize COAL, but for this barrel I will be sticking with OEM. 700 clones and Savage do not have this restriction from what I'm told.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with a 18" 25 Creedmoor running the 133-135 class Bergers / Hornady bullets? I am trying to get an idea what kind of speeds I could expect.

A few kills with some quarter bores. 25-06 and 257 weatherby mag. Both using 90gr absolute hammer bullets. All deer were taken under 200 yards. Not one deer went more than 50 yards. The coyotes was with the 25-06 at 200 yards. He ran 50 yards after the shot to my surprise.
Once I was bitten by the quarter bore bug i was hooked.

There hasn't been this much talk about 25 caliber anything in years, if ever, as there is now. I know quarter bores never excited me in anyway until they started making the mid 130gr bullets.

Is the brass for the 25 SST still only available on Rich Sherman website?
