2026 Cold Bore Challenge Q&A Thread

@Justin Crossley
Shoot, my second shot was long today (628).
I can reshoot if you want me too.
It might seem super ridiculous to you but it's time consuming to make 200 judgment calls on if shots meet the standard or not. I personally don't care who's in or out but we should all strive to adhere to the same rules.

3 yards over the limit? that can be a ranging error….this is getting ridiculous

Not ridiculous at all. Just an honest ranging error while setting up the target. I want to stay on the right side of the spirit of the cbc.

It's not explicitly against the rules but I feel it violates the spirt of the challenge. We have to bring @Justin Crossley in to make in or out judgment calls.

Kind of what I thought too, but I was so bummed with my miss today in wind I would definitely not have taken a shot on a deer in. Thought about bagging it today for that reason, but decided "spirit of the challenge" is to take the shot.

I'm 100% fine if first attempt is the one that stands (I'm the one who chose to attempt the shot in those conditions), but I'm definitely willing to go put a little more time in and try again if that is in the spirit of the contest. Sorry for adding on to the silly question pile!

He made the judgement call and you questioned it….

It's not personal to you.

It becomes problematic to make judgement calls because eventually someone else wants an exception.

Justin sides with you because obviously you can shoot and realizes it's a pain to shoot long distances for most members.

I like rules and standards because it makes verification at the end of the challenge consistent and much less time consuming.

Totally understandable

I am not taking it personal I am just stating a fact of you said he should make the judgement call- and he did- and you don’t agree with that judgement call so you’re turning into a headache- personally I really don’t care if I have to DQ or not- if that’s what it is then that’s what it is and I won’t have any hard feelings over it, but you’re the one making this harder than it needs to be

As far as time consuming this would have been a dead issue when he made the judgement call had you not questioned it. That’s where the time consuming part comes in.

I don’t care either way- I don’t think Justin sided with me just because I can shoot- that’s a pretty silly assumption

I am not going to put anymore time or effort into discussing this. If I am out then I am out and good luck to everyone else.

Are you even entered in the challenge?

I don’t see your post if so- seems like you’ve just been lurking on the Q&A thread

I amended the requirements of the first two shots. The new wording is that the first two shots need to be beyond 575 yards.

The reason Ryan and I had that rule in the first place was so people couldn't just claim a MER over 600 yards and then miss all four shots while getting extra entries. We wanted people to "prove it" if they said they could hit further than 600 yards.

The target size requirement will stay as written.

Hopefully that clears things up.

This scenario plays out just like when hunting, in my opinion. If we miss, the buck gets away, and we kick ourselves all year for missing.

The extra effort should be before we go on our hunt, so we are prepared when the moment arrives for us to take the shot. That's what's so great about this challenge.

No argument from me. Thanks for the clarification and for the work you guys do to run this thing!

Great little challenge put together thanks guys! I had 2 hits in both days at 500. Feel like I should’ve extended my MER. Can I post days 3 and 4 at over 600 just for fun if I claimed MER 500?

You can just share them here? So you don’t cause confusion for the Mods going through the real thread trying to tally up entries.

I hate to muddy the waters, but is withdrawal and re-shoot/re-entry available if we miss on the qualifier?
I really like the data that comes from "no re-shoots". I want to hear about people's misses. For me, that's what separates this from the rest of the noise on the internet where every rifle is MOA or better, and everyone shoots as good in the field as they do at the bench. Just my take.

I need an in or out ruling, are we doing tennis rules (lines are in) or basketball rules (lines are out)? I'm leaning in, you can clearly see the steel rock and hear the impact. I shanked it a bit and have no one to blame but myself so I'm good either way. The target is exactly 10" in diamater. I am post #19 if you want to watch the video. The shot is circled in red on the bottom of the target.

I'd say count it.

I'd say count it.
I bet more line cutters will manifest as it goes on. Those usually count in other shooting events.

Since we're hashing stuff out, thanks for squashing the square targets.

The submission where the unpainted range steel was measured with a reticle from the shooting position stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

And the one with an unpainted target with a bunch of older hits on it.

I'm pretty laid back (in my personal life) and am most competitive with myself, but it feels like if you see something, say something.
