Night 23.5.

.5 because circumstance has us checking the line nocturnal style.

I had a leg hold trap flipped over but not tripped. The set was worked over. I reset it with the pan closer to the dirt hole and added a chicken wing to the bottom of the whole under regular bait. Hopefully I get a return.

I’ll hit it again in the morning.

I'm slow over here. I wonder if its because we rounded everyone up or its just a dormant time.

I had a set that's been stolen twice. I made a new dirt hole closer to the pan and stuffed it deep.

Good time to move a few and try new spots and throw a few new baits and lures out.

Agreed, I've been using Hiawatha and Canine Force. Got the 2 foxes and the cat (not counting opossums and raccoons that hit the canine sets instead of the boxes and dogproofs).

I'm thinking to try peppermint over "smokey nuggets" in my dogproofs. I'm pretty sure the smokey nuggets are kitten chow and liquid smoke in a "brand".

Not sure which way to go on the dirt holes. The hole I stuffed a chicken wing flapper down didn't get hit last night.

Skunk based lures will pull critters in from a long ways a way. Hellfire or Nitro from trapper arts work great.

Try a skunk based lure a few feet off the ground near your set. They come to investigate that and then will smell your set. Something listed as a "call lure."

Pros choice by Russ Carmen is good. Don't get it on your hands!!

Canned jack makeral from the grocery store is good coon bait.

We don't have skunks here. Do you think it will still work? My boys will have a good time with the stinky jokes.
Yes. Don't put the lure on your trap, place it directly above it. A little goes a long ways. You'll still need to use bait though, lure just gets them closer to your trap so they smell the bait.
Good luck!

Figured.

Right now I take the bottle of Canine Force Lure and just shove it on some nearby vegetation and whatever sticks is what it is.

One more Marten from the line.
I had an idea for a snare setup. Couple pounds of meat up high, with snares around the bait above, with snares coming and going on the trail. Several Fox and coyote tracks in the area, so hopefully it works out, post pictures of it and more detail if I have success.

Just curious, heard of a few variations.
Once the skin has dried and you flip them on the stretcher hair it, how long do you like to leave them hide out on the stretcher?
I leave them for a while, 2-3 weeks maybe.
But after a week in the garage with a heater and fan going I could probably take them off the stretcher and stack them flat. I just leave them longer to be safe

Night 29.

The "test hole" set is still winning with the Smoky Nuggets bait.

A test hole is a pit dug with an excavator in a low area to view the water table from grade to see if the area is viable for mining material or digging a pond. I dug it a few years ago and haven't gotten around to excavating but I noticed that it collects bronze frogs and that they would be numerous and then disappear even though the water was still on the surface.

I'd have to go back to thru the thread but I think 6-7 of my catches are from this set including one double.

I ordered some skunk bait to try to catch up with the coyote pack. I haven't heard any howling in a while.

On that note, based on vocalizations I heard all night over 2 weekend camping nights I'd have to say the raccoon rut may be "on".
