Let's have a general winter thread.

Refinished the stock on my M70 30.06 came out looking pretty good. I've got my dad's Husqvarna 30.06 that's cracked behind the tang I'm going to get into next. I'm looking into different ways to try and repair it.
Working on the old Jeep takes up most days but like working on the rifles when I need a break.

If the Husky is a basic Mauser it might be less headache and less risk to get a replacement from Boyd’s.

I wish we knew! I think the wife and I are on our 10th name, we have 12 days to decide before he comes home..

The final four are Otis, Walker, Miller, or Earle.

I'd bypass Otis. Seems every other dog these days is named Otis.

So far I've:
  1. Waxed the exterior of the RV (heated storage unit)
  2. Accomplished 3-4 small interior tasks that needed to be done in the RV
  3. Cleaned all my guns to within an inch of their life
  4. Setup my new reloading bench
  5. Ordered, built and organized a new cabinet for ammo, and reloading supplies
  6. Burned through a few thousand rounds of ammo at the local indoor range
  7. Cleaned and organized other parts of the garage
  8. Read 3 books
  9. Broken 2 snow shovels
Is it spring yet?

I had actually hoped to have star link on the RV and get somewhere warm for the winter but we wound up buying a new air conditioner and spending $1700 on the RV refrigerator last summer. That kind of shot the budget for star link.

Post hunting season is ice fishing season!
Early ice walleyes. Jan 1st trout opens in the boundary waters wilderness followed by regular trout season a couple weeks later. Crappie bite should be firing up soon. Finally turkey season will be here before we know it.

Finished building new evap for making maple syrup last weekend and did a trial run. Beats cinder blocks. Also made 8 more bag hangers now I wait until temps get warmer, probably in mid-Feb.
Cleaned rifles and flintlocks too. Going thru hunting clothes, finding what doesn't fit the boys any more and what they need. Hope to start self-teaching checkering on some scrap wood.

It was 15 here this morning. So we're doing our annual cold-weather clothing check. Supposed to snow this weekend. I know some of you guys get snow twice in September every year, but we do not. It's a big deal to us.

On a bright note, I dreaded feeding animals this morning, but when it's this cold I try to do most of it, at least in the mornings, so the kids don't have to, and by the time I got properly dressed for the cold, I downright enjoyed being out in it for a bit.

Losing my mind. Hoping more work comes so I can buy the new "stuff." Studying possible draws for the new year. Shot a new bow with help from a tech, cleaned the guns and hiking 5-6 miles up the snowy/muddy mountain a few times a weekIMG_1154.jpg

My friend lives around Rockvale and they are saying some thing like 32" of snow this weekend. I was down there this fall staying with him and running dogs and people sucked at driving on dry roads wouldnt want to see it with snow. He thought he was moving south to get away from the snow if it hits he will have more than up here in Sodak

Winter sucks.

The cold sucks
The mud sucks
The wind sucks
Smashing stock tank ice sucks
34⁰ & 80+% humidity sucks
Slow business sucks
Working with freezing tools sucks
Getting up & getting home in the dark sucks
Frozen hose pipes suck

I hate every single thing about it & I'm giving serious thought to writing a strongly worded letter to someone about it. Absolute clownshit.

Eff winter. Eff it right in the A. 🖕🏼

Unfortunately, I don't get a break here, it's hunting season year round. Right now (the entire year), it is invasive species season aka pig season.

Here is camp

It was -17 this morning. Bit brisk. AT least at these temps it generally doesn't snow more. This weekend I took the snow blower down to clean out my girlfriend's driveway. Sheered a pin. Good times.

Sunday went over to Lake of the Woods ice fishing. Caught a handful of decent fish; eater size. Hooked into something MASSIVE. All I know is I'll never know for sure what it was and I'll never see that jig again. I went to the baitshop on my lunchbreak today and bought 4 more just like it.

Currently splitting time between three critical efforts:

  1. Chase birds. January is as good as it gets in my area. 1768968734113.jpeg
  2. Get the kids outside for no other purpose than to just be kids, outside.1768968771204.jpeg
  3. Invest time knocking out projects for the wife to rebuild the necessary relationship currency for next season 😉1768968811028.jpeg1768968854770.jpeg1768968924265.jpeg

Funny side story on that bathroom remodel:

My neighbor’s son was looking for some side work and asked if I needed any labor. He’s a good kid without much by way of hand skills and this seemed like a good opportunity to teach him a couple things. I had him help me tape and paint, wire the lights, get that big ass vanity up a flight of stairs and get the sinks hooked up, hang the mirrors, set the toilet and had him cutting tile. He learned fast, saved me a pile of time, and cost me a few extra bucks and a couple cheeseburgers. Awesome.

On the last day I asked him to put in the towel hanger and toilet paper holder while I put some tools away. Notice anything?

God bless that kid. I came upstairs and he was so proud that he got them knocked out in record time. It took about 3 minutes before I could get my laughing under control enough to tell him he did great but was about to learn how to do some small drywall repairs and paint touchups. It took all of 20 minutes to get it right and we both had a good laugh afterwards.

"Ice fishing" for me would involve drinking a frozen margarita on a beach somewhere while surf fishing. :D

When you live in northern Minnesota, a beach vacation lasts a week then you are back to the frozen everything. Got to get outdoors as much as possible.

My weather center thermometer says -0.5 this morning. 🥶

I had -22 yesterday morning and -4 right today. With colder temps and windchills coming this weekend. In the tough part of the year for boredom. So fishing on the random +32 day is still 50 degrees warmer than what it’s been.
