Caught the end of sand hill season in Oklahoma

Quail saved this years late season Kansas trip. Brie had her first successful points and retrieves at 14 months. It was not a perfect trip for her but we both learn alot together......including that my young girl is a hunting machine! Can't wait to figure out where we go next season.

Several pics here. Season has been good for mature birds , but very low numbers overall for us.
First dog is my buddy in Maine’s old girl. My dog made the trip last year but due to do-workers being asshats had to fly vs drive so couldn’t take him.

Girlfriend came along this time and we both got nice old squaws … Her first duck. Told her it’s down hill from here lol

Hunting has gotten tough as the birds don't seem to be holding and flush before we even get close.
My Munsterlander pointed this Chukar and my miniature Golden Doodle retrieved it, Ha!

We think it’s manky mallard. Must’ve made an escape and was flying around with a flock of mallards. We thought he was a hybrid of some sort when they came in.

Love everything about Mtn Quail except how I have to hunt them. Road hunt them. It sucks. My area is way too big steep and brushy to get off the road with a dog. I put 30-40 miles on truck. Find coveys in road. They scatter. Park truck, unload dog, get off road. Flush a few. Get back in truck, drive to next covey.

They’re a tough bird to hunt, rarely cooperate. Snow made a meaningful difference in a positive way last weekend for me.

Next time you bust the covey - walk up to where they flew off at. Crouch down at the edge of the gravel/briars/ferns. Mimic their gathering call. Wait until they show back up in the road. Rinse. Repeat.
Spent time with a guy in Florence who both he and his wife had that regroup call down pat - watched them collect a good number of birds after the initial shot/covey rise without getting into the tangles.

Sometimes I scout em like that, drop a pin and come back for em…but, hell, I’ll blast em any where I can find em.
