Ruger M77 in 7mm RM. McMillan stock, benchmark 24” #2 contour, timney trigger, Zeiss 3x9x40 z600 reticle and 140 ttsx @ 3100 fps

Only thing original on my gun is the action. But it was made the year I was born so that’s a fun side note, and I’ve shot deer, elk, antelope and pigs with it and it’s never let me down.

When I used it for elk exclusively it was with 160 AB, but since I now use it for everything I swapped to the 140 ttsx

My perfect elk rifle;

- All new 6.5 Flatbrim super short mag running 199g hammers @4000fps, new design has laser like trajectory with little or no recoil or blast, (guaranteed 1 gutshot kills to 1.5k yrds)
-carbon fiber folding barrel 18" .25moa 10shot groups (decided to not run a suppressor to save weight)
-folding carbon fiber chassis, detachable 20rnd mag, dipped in invisible camo
-Helium filled 4-80x77mm nf scope makes this rifle weigh 2oz (drop tested to 1000ft) and takes place of spotting scope
-fits nicely in my spotting scope pocket on my pack

2801ai or 6.5X284 (140gr partitions)......You don't need a custom rig to kill an elk. Save that $$ towards range time/shooting time and travel to/from hunts......

I have a 16” 308, have been considering taking it for elk, but not sure if it's a bit short on power.
It all depends on how far you plan to shoot. As im sure you know, you just need to input your muzzle velocity in a ballistic calculator and see how far you can shoot and get reliable expansion. With my hand loads at the elevation i elk hunt i can go about 500 yards and expand my 168 grain nosler accubond long range. That is good enough for me.

I ran several 155gr Scenar with Varget and RL15 from my Waypoint 16" barrel and was getting 2725 average. I would have no issues taking elk out to 350-yards with this. My 22" with Varget and 168's goes around 2800 and has taken 4-elk to date. Lastly, 20" barrel and 125gr NBT around 3,000 has dropped a few for my kids. The 308 works when you put them where they need to go.

I sold my M77 7 mag when i staryed bowhunting. Unbeknownst to me when i decided a couple years ago i would just go buy another one because i wanted to increase hunting opportunity, they dont make em anymore and a used one was 3 times what i originally paid for the one i had. So now i'm stuck with a Browning 7. I cant wait to kill something with it. But that Ruger killed a lot of deer and i never should have got rid of it.

This is my concept, then.

Perfect would be 18” proof barrel with the can, carbon stock, and the pictured S&B 4-16x42. Best optics I’ve ever owned, and should never have sold.

Edit to add, or just an AI AE MKII, 18” proof carbon. Because.

Did you do a walk-back or french tune on that folding barrel?

That’s a clutch rifle bro, but I prefer the 6.8 Hella Sick for elk. I’d also go with the new Vortex ULHT HUSH edition at 6oz with the 100% unreliable tracking guarantee.

Only detail I’m still working out is do I put on the Spartan adapter for the Javelin bipod or a picatinny to Arca adapter to use with tripod?
Really similar setup to yours just built off of a Zermatt Origin action and in 6.5.

I opted for a spartan gunsmith adapter (also run a classic pic adapter + a javelin during hunting season)

Works great, but some fore & aft adjustment would be nice in some positions.

I carry my elk rifle more than I shoot it. Requirements: Light weight, hard hitting, capable in the woods and out to 500 yards. Dead solid reliable. My solution: Remington 700 LH, Lilja barrel in #1 contour, glass stock from a defunct manufacture, Kahles 3x-9 scope. Weight loaded, under 7 lbs. 3/4" 3 shot groups at 100 yards. With 130 partitions or hornady GMX or GX bullets, deadly to 500 plus yards. Oh, and with a 2 lb Jewell trigger, it's easy to shoot well. YMMV.

Browning BAR High Grade (light), 7 RM, leupold vx-2 4-14 for fine duplex, hornady 175 interlock. No recoil, quiet and good out to 600yds. Killed over 50 elk so far - why would I change.
