Ever wonder what happens if you shoot 6 creed thru a 6.5 creed?

Me neither! Until I did…….

Not my most proud moment but while at my range yesterday in a bit of haste to sight in, for the first time I had my tikka 6.5C and 6C with me and obviously ammo for both.

Apparently I wasn’t paying the best attention and also didn’t have my hand loaded boxes of ammo marked in big bold enough letters (let alone headstamps…) and loaded up a few rounds of 6C into my 6.5C. Which of course happened to be suppressed.

I shot. Everything seemed 100% normal. Muzzle report, recoil, etc. But no impact at 100yds. I look at the chrono. 2215fps is a tad slower than expected from my normally 2800fps loads. Must be the chrono right? Shoot another. 2216fps. Well at least my handloads SD are going to be solid!

I scratch my head and investigate a tad further. Didn’t take long to see the error….6C headstamps. FML.

Of course my first thought is I destroyed my barrel and zero chance I didn’t hit a baffle with the can on.

So I load up some 6.5C this time. Suppressor sounds fine. Bullets chrono where they should and three of them touching. Not completely sure I “dodged a bullet” but small chance all is going to be ok.

Further inspection back at the house, the rifling looks normal and somehow it appears I didn’t hit a baffle. Mind blowing that bullet could consistently come out and not cause damage.

Pretty sure I got lucky, hopefully it serves as a reminder/warning to anyone else reading.

Yikes.
In college I put a 30-30 through an old Mosin-nagant.

The bolt locked up, and I had unburnt powder tattooed into my forehead. After beating the action open with a sledgehammer, the bolt lugs had cracks going through them.

Your post gave me flashbacks to that day. Glad you’re ok. And sounds like the gun and can are no worse for wear

I have a .32ACP that got run through a .380.

I also found 270 brass that my dad had run through his 06. Walked away chuckling because he'd been complaining the old eifle didn't shoot like it used to

So you have a fireformed 6.5mm Creedmoor case now?

I'm actually not surprised the can survived. Assuming the bullet exited the barrel with maximum skew (which may not have been the case), it would still be quite a ways downrange before precessing further.

Yeah I’ll probably check because that mistake could definitely end differently. But agree I doubt it would chamber without crazy force…..

I did the same thing last summer two different times, suppressor and barrel were fine.
I’m a lot more careful about checking before I load a mag now

270 in 30-06 was part of my hunter safety class almost 30 yrs ago. Luckily it was just dummy ammo but the lesson sunk in.

Yep, somehow slipped identical boxes of 7mmRM into my 300WM shooting bag.

Fire formed 7mm cases in a 300 be like

Did the same thing with my NRL rifle last year. They did kiss the recoil-x brake. Shot a bunch of matches after that with that rifle, at its last match before retirement it had first round impacts on 69/72 targets. Barrel did not care at all lol

I shot a 6.5 creedmore through my .308 once. At first I couldn’t figure out how I missed the target and then figured it out pretty quickly. No damage done.

I have accidentally put a 6.5 Grendel through a tikka 22-250 8tw. I survived unharmed and the bullet only hit about 12” high at 100yds.

I have also nearly shot a 7.62x39 through a 308. Sometimes you’ve got to slow down and pay attention.

I may or may not have accidentally loaded a 156 berger instead of a 133 berger into my 25 prc (the boxes were right next to each other on the rack)...

Took me awhile to figure out why my load wouldnt chamber

For the record you can seat a 6.5 into a 25 without too much more effort

Hell, I once (on purpose) fire formed a whole box of 270 win to 338-06. Worked fine, no harm done as far as I could tell, and after I ran that box of brass for 5 or 6 reloads (would be still, but I rebarreled that gun).
