I start with a 500 grit belt, then move to 800, then 1200, then strop. Practice on kitchen knives and you will be shocked how easy it is to become proficient and fast.
As I understand mirror finishing a bevel, it reduces the functional efficacy of the edge. The micro-serrations for lack of a better way to describe it, ultimately get polished away and the edge loses some slicey-ness.I use a KME system as well. Quite a learning curve and not very a blink once and you're done kind of deal but with the strop kit and accompanying compounds from Stropman for the KME system, one can produce an edge that is impressive. The key to sharpening is angle consistency and patience to get steel to a mirror finish, which is just a full display of my ADD and not truly necessary for a field knife.
Shoot me a PM if you need any help with the learning curveThanks! I will get one ordered
Will do. Thank you!Shoot me a PM if you need any help with the learning curve
I've tried to perfect that angle hand sharpening and envy those who have that talent. Well done.![]()
That’s the whole system plus my skill. I don’t need anything in the field, my knives go the distance.
Do you have an exact name or link to the Amazon version?Except for the very talented, nothing compares to a fixed angle system. I have one of the Amazon knockoffs of the TsProf, and it's excellent. Very clean edges on everything from 420HC to 15v with similar effort. Using a diamond pasted strop to finish and touch up. It's crazy how long a good apex will last vs a poor one. My Iron Will A2 knife never previously could do an entire animal without sharpening. With a proper edge, I just did an entire bull elk with it and it's still sharp. I'm betting 15v or even M4 could do several elk with or without a strop.
