FYI
I’ve elk hunted some WYO wilderness areas. Guess what - they were crowded! Just as crowded as some of my Colorado OTC areas.

Choose wisely.

My gripe isn’t really with the state or it’s residents. The residents obviously benefit from the law but it is my belief that the state government, the G&F agency and the outfitters there are greedy.

You guys don’t know how lucky you are. In Oklahoma there is very little public land and the Texans have moved in and leased all the good hunting land up at ridiculous prices.

10% of the tags at high prices to keep your tags cheap is fair but the law which was created to increase the states outfitters and prevent me from hunting federal land that my federal tax dollar support is ridiculous.

It’s not luck living in a state with public land it’s a choice.

Just curious. Excluding sheep hunts, how many of you Wyoming residents hire outfitters? I can think of very few circumstances (maybe a really really good elk unit) would I personally hire an outfitter. I think that’s why this law rubs me the wrong way. It simply eliminates me from applying for Wyoming’s best units because I won’t hire a guide.

There's so much conjecture and speculation here, it's going to take awhile for Bob to set the facts straight.

Do you know that the WGF consults WapitiBob with questions?

WapitiBob doesn’t ‘believe’ stuff about Wyoming. He KNOWS

Original post says has 5. So nope.
Then I don’t know why he’s griping about the wilderness guide law and hunting in park and Teton county. Most of the biggest bulls are killed on late tags and even with max points odds of drawing are low.

Wyoming G&F are the biggest crybabies that scream of there budget shortfalls every chance they get. I just wonder what they would say if the nonresident dollars were to fall off for a couple of years. I am sure that someone on here will chime in claiming that it is federal money that make up the majority of the department’s budget. I am not buying that. Without nonresident money Wyoming G&F budget would take a significant hit and do you think that the residents and outfitters will come to the rescue. I doubt it they seem to scream bloody murder every time their tag prices go up $5 bucks.

speaking of cry babies. lol

I guess if you scream and complain you'll eventually get your way. I supervise millennials with the same mindset. Not willing to put in the hard work and time like past generations

My point was that if you aren’t careful the rich will price you out. It has happened here in OK. Just like paying exorbitant prices to lease land, the rich have no problem hiring a guide. In time you might go from the guy behind the rifle to the guy carrying the rifle. Hunting should be everyone’s right not for only the privileged.

From the boot leather I’ve put down in Wyoming helping buddies don’t see why it really matters that state has some huge country that may as well be a wilderness pick a spot you can hunt and go hunt locals get a little bit of a bonus if they wanna out the work in to hunt it good for them keep guys like this out of the wilderness

I don’t see your commonality. One of the things that makes America great is that in time with the people’s support laws are changed.

I am well aware that today’s generation are not willing to put in the work and often want something for nothing. I also think that today’s youth don’t see the value in the outdoors and would greatly hamper it with little thought.

And this is how you know you've got an easterner who doesn't understand the first thing about western game management or the bigger picture of good heard health = good hunting. Coming from MT, I can only dream of the day we get some of those whiny crybaby G&F guys up here to create some good management in this state. WY game management is a dream compared to most, and yes, it's funded by the public. So when there's shortages, they notice and take action.

So who counts as rich? The fact you can afford to hunt out of state means you probably are of above average means. Does that mean you are being unfair to those who cannot afford to? Just trying to illustrate that this isn't a black and white issue.......and realize most the guides you are dogging aren't getting rich guiding.

The fact that you are an American, have the money to hunt out of state and the rights to hunt are so amazing and so rare in the world today. You are more rich than a huge percentage of the world. You might need to just look at the bigger picture and learn to deal with the small annoyances that accompany getting to hunt in such amazing places such as Wyoming.

I can’t argue that. You have a good point. I am very privileged to have the opportunities that I have. I get that and I am grateful for that. My argument is that the law is a racket set up by the WY gov and the outfitters many years ago. To you it is an annoyance and it is, but that doesn’t make it right. Outfitters make great sacrifices and don’t get rich doing it. They help the inexperienced, the privileged and the people not willing to put out the necessary work to be successful. However whether I hire a outfitter or not should be my choice and I shouldn’t be locked out because I don’t fall into one of those categories.

This again??? I hunt Wyoming and Idaho and live in Nebraska, I've hunted Colorado as well but choose not to anymore.

For the quality of hunt Wyoming provides in non wilderness units, with limited pressure. . . They can tell me I have to hire a guide, ride a Shetland pony, and have a clown with me everywhere I go.

I have hunted a unit several times. That most people eliminate in the first 5 min of research, and I've see 330-340ish bulls as well as many in the 290-310 range.

If those bulls aren't big enough for you, you better start saving up you $. Every year in WY some Giants get killed in plain Jane units. Stop whining and go hunt!
