Why is the .270 dying?

The .270 can't shoot any of the "modern" bullets unless its a custom. The ammo for a .270 hasn't changed. Basically all offerings are the 130-150gn class for a rifle with a 1 in 10 twist. Bullets have improved over time, but when we speak of modern bullets, generally it means high BC, heavy for caliber.

The modern, long, high BC bullets that have shot up in popularity have bled over and improved the performance of more traditional cartridges such as with the ELDX. Still viable for slower twist and shorter throat barrels but increased BC.

The answer is MARKETING!
There are many cartridges from the past that will perform on par with "new" ones. Case capacity is case capacity.

What's new is the drive toward long range precision that was such a niche market before. Everyone has a laser rangefinder, and a twisty knob scope, believing their purchases have equipped them to be a long range sniper guy.
The market is for the sale of new stuff. That is where profits are. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with equipment that still works.
Look at the popularity and cost a a Bridgeport.

Yup and if needed/ wanted it's easy enough to swap to a fast twist barrel on most rifles.

I don't see why not, but that is always barrel/ bullet dependent. As with any barrel since all barrels can favor one bullet over another.

For instance I've shot 40gr-53gr bullets through my 1-7 AR's with no issues and acceptable accuracy for AR's. John Barsness has shot the Berger 170gr through his 1-10 twist 270 win with no issues. No guarantees that it will in other 1-10 twists but he wrote about it in one of his articles.

Sure… the real point is that going to a faster twist rarely comes with disadvantages. I rebarreled my shot-out .25-06 to 1:8” twist. It shoots the 120-grain bullets just as well as the old barrel, but it also stabilizes the new 134- and 138-grain bullets. And that fact may make my .270 redundant.

I don't think a fast twist 270 would be redundant to your fast twist 25-06. There maybe some overlap but imo it would be two tools with priorities in two different jobs.

Mmm... Bucket List Item - Shoot an elk while not wearing pants and see if he cares.
