My PH2 with a vortex razor LH (1" tube) 3 x 15 is right at 8.7 without ammo, bipod or brake. Shoot, my bow weighs close to 10 and I hunt with that a lot more. :)

last season I hunted with a Remington LVSF in 7mm-08. With a McMillan Edge stock, Talley lightweights, and a Leupold 3.5-10x40 it weighs in at 7lbs 2oz

Lightweight rifles are like gorgeous women. They're fun to fondle yet will drive you crazy long term. I've found the ideal weight of a complete rifle to be 7 to 9 pounds, depending on animal/environment.

The lightest hunting gun I've ever used is a custom bolt-action AR pistol chambered in .300 BLK that weighs 2.25 pounds with red dot. It's was built for emergency hunting use (not primary) but is surprisingly accurate out to 200 yards. Fun to shoot? Not at all. Ferocious recoil occurs if the buffer tube touches your shoulder.

After that project gun, I had a custom Kimber switch-barrel built by Rick Steinhour of Extreme Rifle Works. In its lightest configuration (16-inch .308 barrel), it's an impressive 3 pounds, 10.6 ounces. Again, not fun to shoot. With the 6mm Creedmoor barrel, the Kimber weighs just over 4 pounds. Recoil isn't bad, but it's still hard to shoot with confidence past 300 yards.

These guns weigh so little that they are unnoticeable on your pack or shoulder. However, they aren't what I'd choose for notching a tag. For a hiking, they're unbeatable. For killing, they're specialist-only tools.

I've learned a lot of rifle lessons over the years, but here's the most important: Pick a rifle, learn to use it, gain confidence by killing stuff, and — most importantly — never, ever weigh it! You will be tempted to find a lighter version, which will only start the cycle all over again. Trust me on this one.

I wanted a “do-all” rifle that was light weight, but still shootable. I went with a Lone Peak Fuzion, with their Alpine Cut receiver. A 20” Preferred Barrels carbon prefit. I dropped that into a Manner LRH stock, which I pillar and glass bedded. Hawkins Hunter DBM and rings, with a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50. I had a VX5HD 3-15x44, which would have shaved 8oz off, but I opted for the NF. I am using a Dead Air Nomad-30 and shooting 225ELD-M’s at 2670fps. At 10.1lbs loaded, I am happy with it. It is more of a mid weight setup, but is very easy to shoot. 500yd hits are almost a chip-shot, and it still has plenty of energy at that distance.

Thank you! It turned out exactly as I had hoped, and it is a shooter, even with factory ammo. I am ready to try it out on some meat this year!

My new favorite is a savage lightweight hunter rebarreled to 284 Winchester.
Topped with a Burris 4-12. Taking it out west for elk and black bear this October. Shoots 140gr accubonds a little north of 3000fps into tiny little groups.

The lightweight I carried last year was a Remington model 7 308 that had the bolt fluted and skeletonized bolt handle. Topped it with a Burris 3-9x. Doesn't shoot quite as well as the savage but still right around MOA.
