They aren't "high-performance" cartridges anymore, they're just high velocity with all the extra handicaps of the era they were designed. Modern bullets and range finding capabilities have surpassed the need for the excessive velocity that causes just as many issues as it once solved. Even Wby has acknowledged that with the release of the RPM line that is much more tame and advanced than their standard lineup, they were just way too late to the game.

What exactly do you mean by Hornady bitch?

Velocity kills. My 257 Weatherby absolutely drops everything I’ve shot in its tracks like the proverbial lightning bolt.

MPBR zero at 300 no holdover needed past 400 yards.

By Hornady bitch I mean everyone fawning over all of the CM and PRC cartridges like they are the best cartridges ever developed.

They aren’t.

Sounds like you're their target audience. Keep buying their stuff and being happy. I won't argue basic ballistic concepts with how much information is out there for free.

So, what is the current go-to high quality US rifle manufacturer?

I grew up shooting Remingtons, and if I breathed too close to them the matte black finish rusted before my eyes.

Winchester isn't American anymore.

Savage (using currently) can't drill scope base holes in a straight line and the bolt wants to bind up if you don't push perfectly fore/aft. And a 2 shot WSM mag?

I want to support American manufacturing and I want a rifle with a smooth, tight action that can hold at least MOA every time.

So, if we hate Weatherby because we don't like their podcast and only rednecks want high velocity, then where should I be looking?

Tikkas aren't American but UM is. You'd be hard pressed to find better folks to send your money to. And you get a system that is far superior to anything currently on the market just due to the tikka trigger design and action.

I have a Weatherby backcountry 2.0 (steel action/slim fluted barrel). it has proven to be an excellent rifle in all respects, very light, well balanced, extremely accurate and groups consistently well. The action has slicked up nicely and is quick, and its LEFT hand. For a made in USA left hand mountain rifle I couldn’t be more pleased. However, I have it in old fashioned .308, so I guess I’m not very cool in the high tech caliber wars. Great rifle though, and the quality of build is very good.

I wouldn’t call him a sell out. This is his job he has to make money somehow.

You are 100% right. There isn’t anyone in this industry that doesnt do some things just to keep the bills paid.

Weatherby's that aren't produced by Japanese Howa run around $3k-4k+, there are plenty of custom gun builders out there that are American owned/operated and source American components in that price range. Christensen (edit: and Seekins) have plenty in that realm and for a little more you can get into a Gunwerks werkman.

Mark V Weathermark is $1500, made in Wyoming.

That's what I've been looking at, I see it as the all function no fashion model.
Buy whatever makes ya happy, and I'm sure it will. As a company they're not doing themselves any favors by offering 243 and 6.5CM as the only non-weatherly cartridges in that line-up. I don't want to see them fail, but disregarding or competing against industry-accepted advancements is a good way to do it.

Would love to see them leverage their MarkV 3.8 COAL ability to chamber heavy for caliber 300 and 340 WBY with a faster twist. Especially that 340. I think with a nice 260-275 grain bullet it would be a real hit. Likewise with the 375 Wby, it's just about perfect. 378 is overkill (though I love mine).

Not gonna happen in the already established cartridges, but they could come out with an "improved" version that allows a longer OAL for heavies and a fast twist. That would be interesting.

You boys do a little research on Peter Chernin and then come back and tell me how awesome Mr. Meat is…that’s who $aint $teve reports to now.

You can pretend and believe all the altruistic BS he has fed everyone from day one but all he’s done is prostitute the outdoors for massive profits. Now he’s funding the destruction of it thru his new “boss”. And he could care less because he has generational wealth and will do as he pleases on his estate when the time comes laughing at us “commoners” as he does.

It’s too bad. I always was impressed with what Roy built. And what Adam was doing until he associated his brand with a bunch of dirt bags.

I read a couple of things, but nothing stood out - what is the worst thing he’s done?

I search a little more and see the guy is a democrat - I shoot and hunt with a lot of democrats. The idea that all democrats are anti gun just isnt true. I saw some comment he made about climate change - it doesn’t take a phd to see many mid elevation ski areas in the west have less skiable snow now than they did 50 or even 25 years ago. Many people that shoot guns accept climate change is a real thing.

None of those side show political issues make me any more nervous than believing the bs from billionaires wanting us to believe what’s good for them is what’s good for us.

Pretty simple, don't buy the meateater or hush editions and it'll add no value to their names. I've had no issues with the two wby rifles I own (both Mark V's) and plan to buy more in the future. Find it funny that most people bashing meateater or hush can give specific examples from their videos. I don't know much about them because I don't watch their content. I assume views = cash, so I don't give them the time of day. I'm sure wby provides some good careers for some Wyoming residents and those are the businesses I'd like to see stick around.

They have plenty of non Weatherby cartridges in other versions of the Mark V
