Hey ya’ll,

Did a couple searches and didn’t find much discussion on the 240 Weatherby Mag. With the 6mm creedmoor and 6UM gaining popularity I’m wondering why no one talks about the 240. I see Weatherby is offering it in their 307 Alpine in a HNT26 chassis, 1:7.5 twist with a 22” barrel. Doesn’t look like Weatherby is offering the 108 ELDM but many of us (myself included) reload, would this bullet work with the 240? What’re your thoughts on the 240 Weatherby Mag vs 6UM or 6 Creedmoor.

I’m surprised the 240, 6mm-06, and 6mm-284 aren’t more popular since they have a noticeable speed advantage over the more popular slower cartridges, but aren’t as extreme as the UM or one based on a necked down belted case. My 6mm-06 with a 28” barrel is easy to reload for, easy to shoot, goes fast and makes everyone grin when they shoot it. I’m sure that cool 240 case makes everyone smile as well. This barrel won’t shoot anything over 100 gr, but when it’s burned out I’ll definitely go with a faster twist.

In factory loading, the weatherby family is extremely expensive. If handloading, you have 1 option for brass. But otherwise, sure. If I wanted an ulra fast 6mm, I'd probably chose this, as I've come to prefer not wildcatting anything anymore.

I'm sure it would work well but it's just not that attractive because it's like a belted '06 case that costs $2.5 or more each for brass. I'd rather have a 6-6.5 PRC, 6x284, or 6-06 for the handloader. Or you can get a hornady interlock factory load for $2.70+/ea in factory which isn't that exciting.

Have lots of fondness and wear time on a 243Win and 240W, + more recently a 6CM (sold it). Also load for my son-in-law's 6CM.

My 240W has a 9" rot K&P #3 barrel on a 700 LA receiver. Prior barrel was a Douglas w/1:10 twist. A 9" twist easily handles a Berger 108 EH. [Seems odd how/why a 7.5 makes sense for a 240W ]

My 240W is very accurate and fast, light carry... dyno rifle. However, given a clean slate I would not think 2x about ditching all of it for a 6x284. All things 6 or 6.5 would offer the most joy in a 284Win case. If not a handloader, 6CM has a ton to offer.

And FWIW, a fast 100 TGK somehow dopes better than all the longer 6mm bullets.

I’m not very familiar with the 6x284! I’ll have to do more research. I have a Borden Alpine action currently in 6.5x47. I have been looking into re-barreling in 6cm, I have a ton of 6.5x47 brass so maybe 6x47, or maybe 6x284 now! Main purpose would be hunting but also a lot of practice shooting. The 6.5x47 doesn’t do it for hunting and I’d like to ditch my 6.5 PRC for a 6mm

If a short action action receiver, my vote is a 6 Creedmoor.

A 284 case length is 2.17" compared to 1.92" for a 6 CM. If a fast twist and seating longer bullets, a 284 almost demands a medium length receiver.

6x284 with a 108 eldm. Shooting them in a tikka so no length restrictions but they'd fit fine in a 2.99" box. With n570 3,200fps out of a 19" barrel is a lot of fun. Second pic is a 115 hybrid target at the lands.
Awesome! Looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the photos
