Yeah, there are a number of states on the east coast with this silliness. ME, MA, CT, MD, PA, NC (public, some), SC (Public). The trend is swinging in the right direction however and every year we make a bit more process in opening up Sunday hunting. Keep fighting... I've written countless emails and gone to a few public hearings.

Yup, it's completely insane. It used to be a religious blue law thing. Now it's mostly anti-hunters who are pushing against it or people who don't want license-holding hunters out while are also in the woods freeloading...
they have 7 day backpack trips available in va? new one on me. I thought all of our public land was fairly accessible for day trips.
The GW National Forest is large & rugged by eastern standards. You can definitely spend a few days exploring

Religious carryover law. I’m sure there is a good reason it’s called blue. We have a number of them in the southeast, mostly relating to Sundays
It took money away from the churches. Can't give to the collection plate if you're hunting. Same reason Priests can't get married. No wife and kids, everything goes to the church when you die.
