With blessing from @hereinaz who had this idea, I'm going to move forward with a group buy for the above barrel. Dimensions will be similar to the Shaw but ~0.020" larger to account for the 6mm barrel, 16.5", 1:8 twist. This will be to fit bolt action AR15 "ultralight ultralight" rifles described in other threads.

I'm not interested in making money, or risking money, so I'll need to collect it beforehand. I'm also not interested in much tweaking of this design, since this is what I want, ha. If you have any suggestions I'll listen, of course.

The manufacturer is Satern, and they're charging me $169 plus shipping - which I thought was a great price - for a MOQ of 10, so I can sell them to you for $185 delivered to account for both shipping charges from them to me, and me to you. They're saying 6-12 weeks from time of order.

One question about the profile: It's shown as 0.625" diameter at the start of the narrow portion, after initial tapering, and 0.525" at the end near the muzzle. How far down the barrel before it gets to 0.525" diameter? Just trying to make some overall weight estimation, and thanks for taking this on!

How much would a 14" steel tube weigh, 0.600 OD and 0.025 thick? About that much difference, I'd say!

If they execute properly, and maintain same contour, and just increase bore by .020, it should be within a couple ounces.

I'm going to assume they don't, and double that. I'm expecting a 22 ounce barrel, and am looking forward to being wrong!

I had planned on a smooth taper, but if you have an idea I'm all ears!

To hit approximately the same weight as the Shaw barrel (just slightly heavier), I'd hit the .525" half way down the barrel and straight from there. That's roughly how my Shaw is profiled.

Being a slightly larger diameter barrel with the same wall thickness, all else being equal, it will be slightly heavier and slightly stiffer than the .223 barrel. My Shaw is about 0.49" to 0.50" in its thin section, so you could probably just spec it at 0.52" inch for that part, if it's easier for them than 0.525", but either would work really well.

Quick Thegman calculation (no warranty): For the same length barrel, the 6mm barrel will have about 5.5% more material with the same wall thickness, so at 16" should hit about 18.7 oz. Add maybe 0.25 oz for the extra 1/2 inch, so I'd guess about 19oz using the profile I mentioned above.

my BCA pencil barrel chamber tapers down to .5" immediately, and carries it to the shoulder for muzzle device. It's the lightest barrel, even with the gas journal on there.

It shoots sub moa.


My feeling is what Satern does with the inside of the barrel will have a whole lot more to do with how it shoots than how they profile the outside of the barrel.

The Shaw barrels seem to be shooting fine, and even the inexpensive BCA barrels seem to generally shoot well, and they immediately hit the small diameter (about 0.49") and are a straight profile from there. All else equal, this barrel will be stiffer than either of those, so should shoot just fine as long as everything else is done well, which I would trust Satern to do.

Agreed. They would probably shoot fine evn hitting 0.53" or so immediately and straight from there. I'd have no worries whatsoever hitting 0.52" half way down and it would definitely make it a bit lighter.

I have several hundred 85 grain Sierra Gameking JHPBT that showed great grouping and performance at mild speeds in a 243 10 twist. Druid Hill also uses that bullet in factory loaded ammo so I can get some ammo with them already loaded to verify if they want to work while getting a bit of formed brass.

Is the 16.5” ovarall length actually overall or is that breech face to muzzle? Typical 16” barrels are usually 16.4-16.5” overall. My cad model of such adjusted to the above drawing comes out just over 16oz. My software is usually very very close. I did it real quick before taking off to run kids around but I will play more with the model later.

16.5 overall. That would be sweet if it were that light!

What ID did you use for bore? .243 or .237?
