Ultralight Ultralight Rifles

My favorite no-nonsense optic for this year is the Burris Fullfield 3-12 w/ Ballistic E3 reticle. It matches perfectly to the factory 108 and 105 6mm ARC out of my 16" gun (2500 and 2600fps, respectively) out to 400yds w/ a ~150yd zero. I would think the 6x45 would be similar with the 87gr at 2700-2800fps or the 105 at 2500-2600fps. It's obviously a little heavier than the SWFA or any of the 3x/5x Pprisms, but you get 12x of usable magnification and really clear glass. I don't know how they did it, but the 3-12 weighs as much as the 2-8 and 2.5-10 Fullfields if their online specs are correct. Their "Connect" app is also pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it. I wish Strelok was still an option; that was my absolute favorite tool to use.

I have a 2-7 Burris Fullfield II that weighs 12oz with ballistic plex reticle.

I’m one of those guys who has an iPhone tied to my work so I’ve never been able to get Strelock to work. Could you look at the 87gr v max going 2600 and 2640 and see how power lines up?
According to Strelock (should be pretty good ballpark):
At 2,600, 1.7" high @ 100Y and 7.5x lines you up pretty well out to at least 450Y

At 2640, 1.6" high @ 100Y and 8x lines up out as far (just squeaks by as 8x is about as far as I think that scope is easily usable)

Got a nice Coues buck with my .223 ULUL at 400 yards. I was holding for the neck/shoulder juncture in hopes of an immediate drop, as most of the exit options for this buck were going to make for a painful and lengthy recovery. Shot landed a little right onto the neck, so it worked out. Recovered the bullet in the offside skin, then forgot it on a rock next to my pack :(

The terrain was pretty steep and rocky, and I packed my camp back a ways carrying water, so I was glad to have the light rifle for this hunt.

Awesome! Great buck. I think you have the range-on-game record now for an UL-U,... time for @Taudisio to get busy with his 6x45.

What bullet/velocity/optics were you shooting?

Thank you!

77 TMK, 2750 fps MV, 5x PA Microprism with Mil reticle.

I found the Microprism a little lacking for brightness and magnification in lower light during my hunt. The early evening shadows and the gray deer had me holding off on taking a 350 yard shot the evening prior. I could see well enough, but not as well as I would prefer for a confident shot or have experienced with conventional scopes.

Yeah, I love my 3x micro prism but my "long" shots where I hunt with that are under 100 yards.

If over 200 was expected, I have other light scopes with more magnification I'd use.

Beautiful coues deer and nice shot!

Make it be deer season again and I’ll see what I can do.

Afternoon everyone, so I've started to build out a ulul based on a bca side charger. I honestly don't have time to read through all 200 pages, so I was hoping that someone could give me a real quick answer. I'm trying to determine if it's worth the time & effort to build a carbon fiber handguard, or just order the jag composites. I've got a workshop and could build one out if it's a viable option. And if building one is the answer, what barrel nut is everyone using? Thanks for any info.

It sounds like time is limited, so you may better off going with the Jag.

There are as many ways to build a CF handguard as there are handguards on this thread. I'm not sure if anyone is using the same stuff or approaching it the same way. I know mine is different than all the others.

It's actually very easy to build one similar to mine; it's the parts research and fitting that takes time. Mine are built with a barrel nut which isn't available currently, so not much help there. The rest is finding the right CF tubing and CF Seatpost clamp off e-bay.

There are aluminum barrel nuts on e-bay that will work with the type I make, or drill and screw CF tubing to the barrel nut like the Kaw Valley/Jag as they're also threaded. They're 34.4mm diameter so probably require fitting a 35mm ID / 37mm OD CF tube to fit.

If absolute weight isn't an issue, the Kaw Valley PCC is also a very good handguard, pretty lightweight and a lot cheaper than the Jag.

If it's the record, I had better be exact ;) 416 yards.
Shatters the previous record by 66 yards!

I did just find an 80 ELD-M load that, so far, seems to shoot really well in my $50 BCA pencil barrel (several loads seemed pretty good, one seemed really good, we'll see if that's consistent).

This past moose season I spotted a bull twice at about 450 yards. Both times tried to get closer and couldn't find him down in the trees. (I've never had to shoot a moose at much over 100 yards, if that). Was just thinking today that if I see a bull in the same spots next year...well...maybe...??
