UL materials in very low temperatures

This last week/weekend I was a stone's throw from Canada ice fishing on Lake of the Woods. During the 4 days we were there, we had the "pleasure" of experiencing temps that never broke 0 and wind chills down close to -40. Any time we ran out of the fish shack, I donned my KUIU SD Hoodie and it did a fantastic job. I was just wearing a merino top, heavy sweatshirt and the SD Hoodie and I could stand the cold for quite a while checking baits and stuff. I had heavier gear but never really needed it.

Anyway, one thing I noticed was the material of the SD hoodie became very loud and "crackly" in the bitter cold. Granted, these are extreme conditions but it got me wondering if anyone has ever had issues with UL materials in cold weather. I was just using the KUIU jacket as an example but this could apply to tents, bags, bivys or whatever from any manufacturer. Mostly I was wondering if anyone ever had material become brittle in the cold that caused some sort of failure. I realize that these conditions are probably outside of typical hunting conditions and the intent of the UL gear, I was just curious as to other's experiences.

It's not about UL materials. Most clothing that has membranes made of petroleum derivatives will sound similar in those conditions. It's probably because the material gets stiff, although I'm not sure.

My SD jacket did the same thing when it was brand new when it got below -10C. I was told by kuiu that it was from the DWR treatment on the shell. It has since worn off and it no longer gets crackly.

Interesting. I figured it was more the coating than the actual material. I was just curious if anyone ever had the material/coating freeze to the point where it became brittle or otherwise caused durability issues.
