Triathlon/Marathon/Endurance Sports Thread

Dang, good luck with that. Post up what you do! I ran my only marathon so far in 2012 when I was 29. Was hitting 8:47/mile until mile 20.... then my right foot started hurting awful. Ended up walking and trying to jog for 6 miles and finished with 5:05. To my lasting shame. Swore I knew I could finish under 4 but wasn't in a hurry, then life happened here I am in my mid 40s. Lord willing it will happen in June!

Good luck! Let us know how it goes

Did my first ultramarathon in December. 33 mile trail race. Despite the fact I’ve ran several marathons (including one about 4 weeks before this race) I got my butt kicked!!!

It turned into more of fast hike than a run. Very technical trail in many places and had over 7k elevation gain. Vast majority of my training had been on the road so it was definitely a challenge.

Thinking of getting back into the triathlon scene this summer/fall. Probably do a couple sprints and an Oly this year. Maybe a 70.3 in late October?? Haven’t fully committed yet. Training for the bike portion is difficult as I have no good places to ride and the thought of being on indoor trainer for hours makes me want to jump into traffic.

Yes - trail ultra runs are a different beast - “run” is used very loosely! Even the elites may hike around 1/2 of the long ultras. “Footrace” maybe a better term.

Good work!

What state are you in? I have never participated in a trail run and I am so stoked about my marathon in June I am looking at doing a 30k trail run in Southern Idaho in July, 18 miles is enough I reckon through rough country!

If you’re talking about the standhope 30k, it’s an awesome run. Fantastic country, very rough. I did the 60k twice, feel free to pm with questions.

I’m in North Carolina.

I ran my first marathon a few years ago and swore I would be a one and done. As soon as I crossed the finish line I said “that sucked, let’s sign up for another one!”

Since running that trail race I’ve shifted a lot of my training over to trails. I find running trails forces me to slow down and keep my heart rate from getting too high. I struggled early in my training by running too fast. By the time I was getting to my race day, I was exhausted from the training.

Forcing myself to go slow on long runs really helped me get faster. My first couple marathons I was struggling to break 4.5hrs. Now, I’m consistently 4 hrs or a little less.

I am on the Hal Higdon training plan and that is what he says about the long runs... just take them easy and worry about your pace on race day, and on the shorter training runs during the week.

Wanna fly out to Idaho in July and run a 30k?

Funny you ask that.

I will be in Yellowstone and grand Tetons 7/10-7/18.

Hey guys. First marathon attempt for me tomorrow. I'm wondering about race pace. Are y'all running these mainly in a Z2 or Z3 pace?

And hydration/fuel. Carry my own in a pack or hit the aid stations?

Thanks

I only ever ran one Marathon - Big Sur in 2012. I got excited and ran the first half too fast, the second half was miserable, but I finished. I wore a camelback and carried my own goo - the same as I did in training.

You should know this from your training. What’s your goal or predicted race pace indicated by your training?

If you don’t, I’d say stick to the zone you did your longest run in, until at least mile 18ish, then you can stretch it if you have gas in the tank.

It's hard to do with all the excitement and other runners, BUT starting at a slightly easier pace and then later in the race picking up the pace > than starting out too fast and getting crushed at the end :)

10-4. I've been focusing on Z2 the last three months. I'll keep it low and slow till late and pick it up if I'm feeling good then.

I've just heard folks on podcasts mention "Race Pace" like maybe it was faster than what you would train at.

I ran my first marathon with my brother in law who is Ironman level.

He encouraged me to get some calories and electrolytes every hour so I brought 4 Maureen 100 cal gel packs and electrolyte capsules. Had one 30 min before start and one each hour during the race. I just drank water and Gatorade at each aid station and didn’t carry any with me.

I kept my pace about a minute/ mile slower than my 1/2 marathon pace. My average heart rate was 141 which is zone 3 for me.

My lung capacity, hydration, energy, and pace was all good.

Legs were killing me and I had some calf cramping past mile 22 but finished sub 4:30 which I was happy with.

For reference, I’m 53 and usually run 1/2 marathons around 1:58-2:00.

Yes - in theory, race pace should definitely be faster than your long training runs, since you won’t be racing on a week’s worth of volume. Some workouts in a training plan would be at race pace - if that’s not how you trained, no big deal, race day is not the day to try something new!

Good luck and enjoy.

My overzealous Z2 training time has been in preparation to begin training for a 100 I have coming in October.

If I do this marathon again next year, I'll have time to throw in some faster work.

Thanks for everyone’s input.
