Congratulations on hitting your goal! That's a lot of work and effort you put in so be proud!!Last year around this time I decided to get in better shape and needed a fitness goal so I decided I was going to run a marathon. I picked the closest marathon to my location, which was a year later. I've never been a runner so I started doing short (as in 1 mile!) runs in January after hunting seasons were over to get in running shape and to a point I could effectively start to train. Then in March this thread popped up and I've been quietly lurking ever since. I'm happy to say I finished the race today!
Thank you to @OregonSteeler for starting this thread as it has helped to motivate and keep me accountable.

First one in the books. Thanks for @Brady R for answering so many questions. Learned a lot about the process. A few takeaways:
What works for 20-30 mile weeks may not work for 40-50 miles per week. I really like the Altra Mount Blancs but they started causing issues when I hit high mileage weeks. I still run in them but ultimately the Lone Peaks with Green Superfeet seemed to work for my foot the best.
You can do anything. Farthest I have run before was a road marathon a decade ago and 22 miles during this build up. This was the most time on feet I’ve had by over 3 hours from prior runs. Despite that with some more fueling I could have gone another 10 (or more who knows).
January races are tough because I always pack on 15lbs during the holidays. Even with 40-45 miles weeks you can’t run off bad nutrition. I would have felt better and performed better at my optimum weight which is around 201-203.
Lastly, trail running has been the absolute best training for mountain hunting I’ve ever done. I barely put on a pack before season and minimally lifted weights and packed out two elk back to back with zero issues.
No clue! After 24 hours I was trying to find another to sign up for. The Big Bend 100k seems interesting. I love that country. Maybe bag another 50k before and looking to pace at buddy at Cocodona.Congratulations! 50 miler next?

Loved your post and appreciate the takeaways. I have a marathon in my sights but will focus on that after triathlon season. If I enjoy the marathon, 50k is something that's very intriguing to me. The only problem is that I live in the burbs so getting to some trails to run takes some driving, and time is something I have to be very protective of.View attachment 1004295View attachment 1004296View attachment 1004297

Damn. 50k in that is no joke.I ended up getting really sick and trashed my training, so did the 50k version of the race instead of the 100k. It was a fun day, I was slow at just over 8 hours, but finished 8th out of 15 male runner's.

How did you do? Pics?Just signed up and committed to my first marathon. I expect it to be painful and slow and only goal is to finish. Won’t run until September though so plenty of time to train.

How old are you? I'll be 43 in May, hoping to run sub 4 in June. Wanna run Missoula Marathon with me?Never ended up being able to run.. about 3 weeks from race day my knee started to give me some problems. I was able to run through if I wanted but the pain would be pretty bad the next morning, so I stopped training hard and focused on recovery. I wasn’t able to get to a point I felt comfortable with it and decided it wasn’t worth potential long term damage.
I was feeling good though! Felt so good I thought I could break the 3:45:00 mark, which I wasn’t expecting.

Dang, good luck with that. Post up what you do! I ran my only marathon so far in 2012 when I was 29. Was hitting 8:47/mile until mile 20.... then my right foot started hurting awful. Ended up walking and trying to jog for 6 miles and finished with 5:05. To my lasting shame. Swore I knew I could finish under 4 but wasn't in a hurry, then life happened here I am in my mid 40s. Lord willing it will happen in June!Just turned 33. My wife and I just had our third kid and with 3 under 6 it may be tough to find the time for the training. I’m hoping to run a couple of halves this summer though. Won’t be able to make it out to Missoula
