Triathlon/Marathon/Endurance Sports Thread

Last year around this time I decided to get in better shape and needed a fitness goal so I decided I was going to run a marathon. I picked the closest marathon to my location, which was a year later. I've never been a runner so I started doing short (as in 1 mile!) runs in January after hunting seasons were over to get in running shape and to a point I could effectively start to train. Then in March this thread popped up and I've been quietly lurking ever since. I'm happy to say I finished the race today!

Thank you to @OregonSteeler for starting this thread as it has helped to motivate and keep me accountable.

Congratulations on hitting your goal! That's a lot of work and effort you put in so be proud!!

Recently signed up for 2026 IM Coeur d'Alene 70.3 and another local half IM a couple weeks before. Though I do need to finally schedule in a marathon as I've never ran one yet.

A few weeks ago I ran my first ultramarathon - a local race, 50k. 12 loops - I had to DNF after the 11th loop and the race director was extremely disappointed but on that loop I nearly injured myself a few times and I work on my feet as a freelancer so if I get injured and call out of work - I don't get paid and I have an 8 month old so that's not an option.

I ran 27.72 miles and had a blast, did much better than I thought I would and it was my first trail race as I do mostly road running. Tons of room for improvement but that makes me more excited and hungrier to keep it going.

First one in the books. Thanks for @Brady R for answering so many questions. Learned a lot about the process. A few takeaways:

What works for 20-30 mile weeks may not work for 40-50 miles per week. I really like the Altra Mount Blancs but they started causing issues when I hit high mileage weeks. I still run in them but ultimately the Lone Peaks with Green Superfeet seemed to work for my foot the best.

You can do anything. Farthest I have run before was a road marathon a decade ago and 22 miles during this build up. This was the most time on feet I’ve had by over 3 hours from prior runs. Despite that with some more fueling I could have gone another 10 (or more who knows).

January races are tough because I always pack on 15lbs during the holidays. Even with 40-45 miles weeks you can’t run off bad nutrition. I would have felt better and performed better at my optimum weight which is around 201-203.

Lastly, trail running has been the absolute best training for mountain hunting I’ve ever done. I barely put on a pack before season and minimally lifted weights and packed out two elk back to back with zero issues.
