How often are yall getting smash and grabbed with your cars?
I question the impulse to move everything into a hotel room.
The vehicle seems safer than the room if all risks are weighed.
Never, but it only takes once to ruin a trip.
When I stay in hotels, I try my best to a) stay in nicer joints, b) park where I can see the car from the window, and c) always bring guns or expensive optics in. It takes only a minute extra and the vast majority of hotel staff and guests don't blink an eye if it's in a case. Of course, no matter how nice a hotel is, the parking lots are all pretty much equally at risk of being targeted.
If someone busts a window out of the car and steals a spotting scope, I can hunt without it. If they steal binos I can grab a replacement at walmart that at least beats squinting with my good eye. If they steal a tent or pants or boots.....same. Walmart is everywhere and generally has gear that'll do - though you might need to break a cheap pair of boots in on the fly.
But steal my rifle and I'm in a bind.
My absolute favorite places to stay on the road are airbnbs, and of those, the best, IMO, are the hunting cabins and guest homes people have - you're in their yard, they live there, it provides a certain level of security if they're in a good neighborhood. Airbnb basement apartments or garage apartments are the same.
