Do the bigger guns still beat the hotrodded 6s like the 6PRC/6UM at distance?

The 6UM with 112gr MatchBurner has a 9mph wind bracket at 700 yards (5k DA). The 7PRC I am shooting with 180gr ELD-M is also a 9mph gun. My current 300wm with 215gr Bergers is an 8moh gun.

So, no- not really. At least not until you get into stupid levels of cartridges.

I have to ask - what are you up to with the 7 PRC? Just testing?

It’s obviously everywhere as the “do it all” cartridge, so would be interesting to read your thoughts after using it. I’ve found it to be a bit much to handle well…

Browning wanted a 7PRC rifle evaled- https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/browning-x-bolt-2-speed-7-prc-field-evaluation.356804/

I shoot a lot of stuff that isn’t written here and was shooting 7 PRC before most knew about it. It is an excellent 7mm magnum cartridge, but yes- it is too much for most.

I currently am not planning any really long range hunting but the faster .243s (and even 22s) interest me a bit in the interest of having a higher wind #...
My 20” 300 PRC Imp with 215s at 2950 and my plinking load in the 26” 25sst 131s at 3170. Shooting them side by side at 1300yards the 300 will have .25-.50moa less drift. As the distance gets shorter from there the gap is bridged concerning wind drift.
If I run a max n570 load with 131s at 3315fps things are about equal but the 25sst bbl is 6” longer. Big .30&338 bullets buck the wind well once you start shooting past 1200yards.

Like most I started out big with 338s then dropped down to 30s then down to 6.5,6s and now I’m mostly running a 16” 223rem and a18” 22creed, both with 80gr eldms in a 8.25lb suppressed rifle. It’s awesome out to 600 yards for texas game. Any further the 6/25/6.5 SAUM’s are great.

Good to know.

I don't have the ability to shoot way out there, but the extra wind forgiveness still interests me a bit.

I very much fall in the camp that would benefit from practice over equipment (and currently shoot my .223 and 6.5cm) but being able to go from a 5mph gun to a 9-10mph gun would at face value seem to offer some benefit?

If it was a cost free trade off- yes. But it isn’t.

Do you mean financial cost? Or something different?

Just playing around a few minutes ago with 4DOF as I sized some .223 brass, and my 6.5cm is a 6mph with wind from 9 o clock and 7mph gun with wind from 3 o clock 🤨(143 ELD-X 2608fps at 3500' elevation and 50 degrees ish).

6 seems more reasonable (maybe even 5?) but going from 7 to 9 is a lot less than going from 4 or 5 to 9 also.

I need to get this stuff reloaded so I can go back to shooting lol.
