The Shoot2hunt Podcast

This has been known. I have stated for 5+ years that ELD-M’s are not AMAX’s now. Due to the small nose opening, and tip material- every once in a while some ELD-M’s produce narrow wounds- primarily the 22cal 88gr, 6.5 147gr, and 7mm 180gr. Not all of them, and certainly not regularly- Barnes TTSX fail to open orders of magnitude more often for instance. But it is something to be aware of.
Thanks for the clarification!

Yes the ones Form mentioned are the only ones there are multiple reports of it happening. I decided to not use the 147s for that reason, but I wouldn't worry about any others.

interesting. what might be different from 6.5mm 147 vs a 140 that would cause the inconsistencies?

It is less likely- and it and the 130gr are the 6.5mm ELD-M’s that I would choose. But every rare once in a while it can also produce wounds smaller than normal.
And this isn't an issue in 130TMKs?

Im currently running 140 ELDm in my PRS gun, I'm about to turn it into a hunting/ match gun hybrid with a Bravo and want to find the best bullet combo that would be suitable for both hunting and matches that way I'm only buying and loading for 1 set up for the mass majority of my shooting.

Would a 130 TMK be the right choice? Im not convinced the ELDM isn't, but why not do everything to minimize error?

No. Not even remotely. First, the nose opening of TMK’s is MUCH larger under the tip. Second, there is a void of lead in the nose of TMK’s, unlike most ELD-M’s where the lead surrounds the shaft of the tip completely. Lastly, the tip material in TMK’s squishes/or squirts out; ELD-M’s usually break off leaving the shaft of the tip in the nose.

The 140gr ELD-M kill fine. But there are no current bullets that create wounds like TMK’s and as consistently.

Ok, last question, I know every gun will be different but how to TMKs compare to ELDs in terms of accuracy and consistency?

My rifle shoots 140 TGK and 143 ELD-X the same, sub MOA 10 shot groups.
I know Berger is known to be more consistent lot to lot and on overall bullet length. But I wasn't sure about Sierra. ELDMs can vary pretty significantly even out of the same box. That's just on a caliper tip to base. Not sure about to the ogive.

130gr TMK’s generally shoot well in nearly all guns. Haven’t seen much issue with either in 6.5mm.

The 130 TMK is absolutely nasty on game. It wrecks stuff. As Form said, it’s accurate as well

Any issues with closer range shots? Like Fuds talk about them just grenading at closer range?

Haven’t been around them on anything closer than 100-200 yards, but I wouldn’t expect an issue

I have yet to kill anything under 200 yards so whatever .

😂. I’ve have only been around it being shot from a 6.5 PRC, so a 100-200 yard impact would be similar to a Creed MV
