The response Jake and Ryan asked for concerning "why not use vulgarity?"

Well, it would appear that a lot of folks on this thread will be taking your advice. Won’t be tuning in.
That's good, maybe they can start worrying about one of the millions of other problems we have in society today instead being so upset by bad words.

Maybe Ryan and Jake decide to bleep out swear words, but I suspect even that wouldn't be enough. Maybe they decide to consciously not swear on the podcast and then everyone can listen.

I would not stop listening if they cleaned it up. The cursing has zero impact on how I enjoy the show. They sound just like 90% of the guys in the trades who I work with. Good people who use curse words amongst men, not in front of women and children or in professional settings. Some would argue that being at work in the trades is a professional setting, but there is nuance. When I was in management rolls professionally, we would never use profanity in front of subordinates, but if we were in a meeting or setting where it was all management, even EVP and senior management would curse.

But also my comments about watering themselves down wasn't necessarily targeted at you, just more of a broader point regarding the replies by many in this thread.

Honest question though. Do you really think they are intentionally cursing in the podcast as some sort of publicity stunt? Or is it infinitely more likely that is how they talk amongst friends?

I’m merely questioning the point of asking for a case against profanity if there isn’t any underlying degree of willingness to change anything. What would it be? To create a buzz? To deflect from having to put forward a thoughtful response of their own?

It’s easy enough to say sorry we’re not changing; our podcast our rules; whatever…to stand behind their own work as it is.

So, is it all a veiled call for public support affirming their speech is acceptable? Or are they genuinely asking? It’s only worth discussing further if it’s the later.

I will say any machismo assigned to vulgar language is completely misplaced. And in this thread there has been a fair bit of calling into question the manhood of folks who prefer not to embrace profanity in their own language and content consumption. It’d be easy to chalk it up to immaturity, but really it’s just naive.

When you get around folks who have proven their grit, toughness, and worth, swearing isn’t a determining condition. Some no doubt swear in spades, some don’t as a matter of principal, and some don’t seem to say very much at all…and it’s often they who leave the greatest impression.

In all seriousness i played, everyone else played.
Why this still going on.
Seems people are more into the drama and bullshit on this site more than ever.
And why do any of us actually give a shit what Ryan or Jake say or do or think.

Not yet. I got all the feedback and there are a couple parts im gonna restructure a little and see if i can shorten it a bit. Im gonna use it in three other contexts- without mentioning jake and ryan of course. Writing something about speech ethics was on my sabbatical goal list.

Ill post the link to the substack when im done.

I'll look forward to reading it in the substack link once you are finished!

For all those of you saying this is a waste of time, are you telling me you'd rather debate which pants to wear elk hunting for the 784th time?

That's pretty funny. Ive worn shorts elk hunting. Some of the old timer guides here in Wyoming have guided hundreds of hunters in blue jeans and wrangler shirts.

I did not expect this thread to be at 15 pages and growing 😂

Kind of makes me curious how there is so much commentary on this subject, but I think I would feel unfulfilled if I read it all. Kind of wild.

On a related topic, I listened to the episode about the 6.5 can the other day and I didn’t notice any cussing, so I think it would be a lot more offensive if they bleeped out all of the cussing, but it would be funny… that’s pretty much the only way I notice cussing unless someone is being over the top, purposely.

I tend to still believe that written profanity dumbs you down, and I usually skip past whatever they have to say...
How so? If you have a decent argument, this would be the place to lay it out.

How does profanity dumb you down?

I don’t take a position on it either way, I don’t care or notice unless someone is trying too hard, but I’m curious about your argument

You didn’t listen very carefully. Not 10 minutes in I thought, “they obviously have not read the 13 page dissertation or 15 page discussion…” 😂

And I did listen to it all and don’t think bad of any of them, but that’s not how I want people to see me personally or professionally. Still good info and I have a very good filter perched on my shoulders.

It doesnt.

Although im not sure where hes going with "Written Profanity" as someone who occasionally swears, I dont think I've ever typed out curse words.....

I assume I’m a little desensitized to vulgar language. I don’t think I cuss very much, but I guess I would have to ask a third party it sounds like😏

One that still cracks me up when cussing is brought up is the boat owner I used to work for gave everyone the same nickname, and it was ****face (the naughty word that starts with an F) besides his vocabulary at times, he was pretty proper. I think his wife would cut his nuts off if he talked like that at home, so I think he just got it all out of his system when we were working.

I do think vulgarity has some value in enhancing some humor, and it can be a good way to convey some emotion, and I hear if you don’t use it you lose it.

Do you want to be less funny and emotionless? These are important considerations. I wrote 14 pages explaining the value of profanity, but I need my daughter to proof read it for me so I don’t sound like a degenerate
