Texas doing my homework

First post here. I've always said I'll go out west to hunt, and I'm doing homework to make it happen.

I prefer to read more than post, it seems there is more info than I'll ever be able to digest. On the other hand, I've got tons of questions too.

Maybe I'll start with this; Southcentral Texas is 1,000 miles from anywhere out west.... so, if I said OTC elk or OTC mule deer, which would be the better species to start with and in which state?

My experience is Whitetail and pigs here in TX.

Thanks guys,

HWR

Buy a PP for pronghorn in Wyoming this July and make plans for a couple of years down the road.
We do have some general deer tags to be drawn with 0 PP too. You may find hunting general areas in Wyoming have less pressure than OTC in Colorado.
Welcome.

Thanks for the tip. My brother did a Pronghorn hunt in Wyoming a few years ago and was happy with it. I know I'm probably a year or 2 away from anything. I need to purchase/upgrade gear along the way so it doesnt squeeze us all at once.

Howdy from San Antonio, Just started going out west myself and watched everything I could from Randy Newberg on youtube and beyond. As stated above we started with Wyoming Pronghorn and did my first CO elk hunt last year. CO OTC elk is the easiest to draw...just hand over the credit card. Biggest thing is to get out there and do it.

I've gotten back to watching Randy Newberg on YouTube now and he's got great content for education and entertainment.

I've been on Bowsite reading for years as well as Texasbowhunter.com and Archerytalk. I didnt follow through and register for Rokslide until now, better late than never.

I'm more likely to Rifle hunt in the west, but archery is an option eventually and I'm working to improve.

Getting out there and doing it is what has me going right now, not getting any younger or richer...!

Thanks for the welcome. This site seems to have more content than most, and I recognize some of the member names from the other site's I've been a part of in the past. Lots of experience for sure!

I'd recommend a GoHunt subscription, and read all the 'XYZ State Application Strategy' articles. It will tell you a lot about the each state's application process, what to expect for draw odds, if there are OTC units etc.
