I've been using an index finger release for 18 years and I'm a command shooter. So far never had any issues.

Thanks brother. Definitely want to get out in front of it than take years of fixingI think a tension release is a great learning tool (especially early on) and, yes you can hunt with it too. Takes some getting use to and some discipline but I know a few guys that use it for hunting. Most however, seem to use it as a tool to learn a good "pull through" execution and an unanticipated shot and then switch back over to to a thumb style or index release. If archers were taught with that type of release right from the beginning I don't think target panic would be a thing. It's those crappy index finger releases 90% of us learned on that was the culprit.
Back tension has also helped me tremendously in a relatively short time span! I use a UV button release, but I can focus almost entirely on applying back tension and my brain just holds the pin where it needs to be.Haven't had target panic issues with an index finger release since I learned to shoot one with back tension many years ago.
The owner of my local archery shop told me that same thing. I’m going to give that a try and see if it helps. Thanks.Blind or blank bail shooting is one of the best ways to overcome target panic.
Great article. Have not had target panic, but as a new hunter I know it’s possible. Work hard on a lot of similar techniques and drills you mention. Switched from and index release to a thumb this off season. The Carter Too Simple is a great release. Nock On Silverback is also an excellent tension release that really works on training the pull through of the release. Andy makes many excellent point here. Blond baling is a great training tool as it takes your brain off the idea of aiming and allows you to focus on the processHey Rokslide, I want to introduce you to Andy May, AKA @Ridgerunner7.

Andy is a resident of Michigan and a longtime DIY hunter who took up hunting later in life. With no mentor, Andy learned to hunt through trial and error. He became obsessed with tracking down mature bucks in his pressured home state of Michigan. After years of consistent success, he ventured to other states, from Wyoming to Maryland and everything in between. Andy is a blue-collar guy who works two jobs yet still finds a way to be successful on multiple DIY trips each fall. He has hunted 19 states, all DIY, and has killed 83 bucks. Most of which are trophy antlered and with a bow. Although Andy loves hunting big bucks, challenging himself with new adventures and quality experiences with his friends and family outdoors is the most important thing to him.
Give Andy a warm Rokslide welcome, and check out his article on target panic and shot execution.
Target Panic and Shot Execution in Bowhunting
Nice read, Andy! I don’t live too far from you. I’m in the Grass Lake area(Literally near where The Troy Stephen’s and Calderone bucks were taken) and I myself have put down many great bucks around here. There’s certainly some fine hunting around here! I enjoy listening to you on the podcast.
