So who has a $3000.00 Tikka T3X Lite in .223 now? I have 856.00 in my super plane jane stock blued barrel that just arrived. THis is with tax , shipping and transfer fees. I will have additional 200.00 getting the barrel cut and threaded. I still think its dumb that most tikka's dont come with threaded barrels nowadays. So ill be at 1056.00 before I fire a shot. Dont think i will be tempted with a 650.00 stock to save 5 oz.
Buy a Seekins and be done at some point.

@Stockys: Are you saying that you are making changes to some of your existing stocks to shorten the trigger reach?
I was thnkinit might be hard for stockys to redo their molds but I wonder if since it's shortening the trigger reach and just filling in space they could just add some extra piece to the mold to shorten it. I dono anything about molds though

From my numerous interactions with @Stockys, it’s clear they are committed to building awesome stocks at affordable prices while giving incredible customer service.

If they see an opportunity for improvements to existing stock designs, I have zero doubts they’ll swallow the cost for new molds.

Same here. I almost pulled the trigger on one a couple weeks ago, but I think I'm going to wait. I'm going hope they make up a new mold with a shorter trigger reach.

@Stockys how far below bore centerline is the heel on the non-vertical/traditional hunter grip carbon stock you have?

To your point, I thought I'd share a quick data point for the "ounce counters" out there... a seekins havak element carbon LA stock (including bottom metal) is 7.6oz heavier on my scale than the Stockys VG Tikka Stock (including metal bottom metal). 33.7oz and 26.1oz respectively on my scale.

While the regular Seekins Havak action (like on the PH2) is a Rem700 footprint, their Element models are NOT!!! They do not fit in Rem700 chassis or stocks.

I will say though... if stockys had a mold for the Seekins Havak Element SA, you could replace the factory stock, and end up with a 5lb rifle... cut the 21 inch barrel down to 16 or 18, swap the butt pad for something lighter, and you would have a true 4.75lb rifle that would be a shooter. Light enough that you could put a ultra-reliable 20-25oz scope and a small arca rail, an 8oz suppressor, a spartan bipod... and all up you would under 7lbs... pretty darn shootable in a 6.5creed or 6creed. it would be pretty difficult, if not impossible to get a tikka set up the same way and just as lightweight. But, you could build the tikka for probably a grand less...

Good info. That’s a long action compared to a Tikka. That’s a fair comparison because of the Tikka one size fits all action size. The 6.5 PRC PH2 I held wasn’t ultralight, but it was nice. The 300 win mag Element I held was noticeable lighter.

The comparison I think of is between the short action vs. Tikka finished rifles in a 6 creed or 6.5 creed. I would think a short action will have an advantage over the Tikka stock and action?

Correct. The actual weights I provided were from my seekins havak element 300wm. However, the 308win SA version is 8oz lighter in weight. The LA and SA havak element stocks are within an ounce of each other though, if I'm not mistaken. In fact, the SA might actually be a tad heavier because more material is cut out of the LA stock for the longer action. My Hypothetical sub7lb build numbers were based off of losing 8oz off of the 5.5lb havak element 308win by swapping to a (non existing) lighter stockys stock (if such a thing existed).

In the end, the lightest I've been able to get a factory tikka Barreled Action is 57ounces (223rem superlite fluted cut to 16 inches, with a fluted bolt and mtn nob).
The difference between the weight of steel in a 308 barrel and a .223 barrel is .16oz per inch (bigger hole equals less steel and less weight). Thus, the tikka superlite BA would weigh 3lbs 6.44oz (54.4oz) if it were chambered in 308win and cut to 16 inches.

For comparison sake, a Kimber Mountain Ascent 308win BA is 3lbs 1.2oz at factory length, and 2lbs 12.4oz (44.4oz) at 16 inches.

The Havak Element 300wm barreled action (without brake) and 22inch barrel is 56.4oz. I would estimate it to lose about 6oz if the barrel were cut to 16 inches, and another 1.2oz if it were a short action instead of a long action. Which would put it at about 49.2oz. Almost exactly halfway weightwise between the Kimber Mountain Ascent and the Tikka Superlite... all else being equal.

However... neither the kimber or the havak element have hardly any aftermarket support and neither can be put in a Chassis like the hnt26 if you want a folding stock to make it more compact.

I think for the ultra-weight conscious... the only way to get close to or lower than the weight of a kimber 84m, is to use a Pierce Titanium action with a pencil barrel (kimber-like profile), but that will cost a chunk of change... and I think the wait on those is like 10 months or something... or go with a MacBros Element... action weighs just an ounce and a half heavier than a kimber 84m I believe... and then put on light profile barrel. They aren't much more $$$ than a tikka action... several ounces lighter than an AnTI, and then you have all the aftermarket options that come with a rem700 footprint.

Dang, you know some stuff. When I go light, I am going to have you design it. I did see that MacBros ultralight action in steel the other day. Impressive weight cutting.

And MacBros has a pretty decent Mil discount too... and they are like a stones throw from LRI, so they will like literally walk the action over there if you want LRI to build you something or flute a barrel or something... or MacBros could even build you a barreled action if you like.

If you want ultralight, see Stockys post a few days ago... they intend to make an inlet for the Kimber 84m... as long as you are fine with kimber's limited caliber selection (or intend to rebarrel)... that will be about the easiest way to do a cheap ultralight build. Buy a kimber hunter 6.5cm, buy a stockys stock for it (in the future of course), have the barrel cut and threaded to your preferred length... and boom, you got a shootable sub 4.5lb rifle for about $1300. (assuming you can find a hunter for $800ish, you get the stockys with the rokslide deal at 30% off, and dont pay your gunsmith more than $150 to cut and thread). If you want to shave another 3 ounces, buy the mountain ascent (but it will cost you an additional grand) for its barreled action.

By the way... for those who dont think lightweight guns like kimbers shoot very well, I am of the opinion that it is the typical sporter style stock ergos (or lack their of) that is mostly to blame. I have a couple kimber uberlites that I modified the stock into a vertical grip (very short reach to the trigger, somewhat like the rokstok) and raised the comb... and by pulling back on the vertical grip, firmly and straight into my shoulder with the 3 fingers of my trigger hand, keeping my thumb loose and to the side of the stock instead of gripping around the stock... Im able to shoot far better groups than I ever could with the traditional grip with my thumb around the stock. Even though my 308win weighs just 5lbs 12oz including scope and suppressor and arca... it will still do subMOA for 5 rounds and sub 1.5MOA for 10 rounds... inspite of having the recoil energy of an 11lb 300WM... My 6.5Creed, has a bigger scope and weighs 6lbs 12oz suppressed, and has quite a bit less recoil, and will do 10 rounds inside 1MOA. Granted, Im not shooting rapid fire, and am waiting a bit between shots... So, I think a VG gripped Stockys Kimber could be a real gamechanger for those who want to shave some pounds off their gear weight, but not sacrifice shootability.

However, it will still be hard to beat a Tikka build if you want more factory caliber options, like 223rem... For a 10 ounce weight penalty, you can still build a relatively inexpensive rifle ($919 tikka fluted superlite from Sportsmans, $90 MTN gear bolt nob, $65 bolt fluting from LRI, $384 Stockys VG with 30% Rokslide discount, $150 cut and thread, $30 thread adapter to 5/8x24, $125 pure precision bottom metal, $30 wiser precision mini arca rail, so $1763 all in before tax and shipping... cut it to 16 inches, throw on DNZ Game Reaper 1 piece rings, a Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40, and an 8oz can like a Scythe or a S-Ti, and you've got a sub 6.75lb rifle all up... for under $3400 including scope, tax stamp, and suppressor... I'd also add that if you went full custom with a MacBros Element and having someone like LRI and K&P make and install a custom barrel for it, you'd end up about $400 more than the tikka ultralight build, but likely be about 8oz less... it would just take and extra few months.)

When stockys does release a kimber option, I may do it just because, I have had 2 kimber hunters in the past and liked them fine, a really ultra light build may be a good reason to own one again, especially if I could find a 243 or 257 roberts with low recoil. Would be fun to build a cheap super light rifle, put a swfa UL or a little trijicon and have a cool little handy still hunting rifle, or just a scouting rifle in case you get a shot opportunity on a kitty while scouting
