And MacBros has a pretty decent Mil discount too... and they are like a stones throw from LRI, so they will like literally walk the action over there if you want LRI to build you something or flute a barrel or something... or MacBros could even build you a barreled action if you like.
If you want ultralight, see Stockys post a few days ago... they intend to make an inlet for the Kimber 84m... as long as you are fine with kimber's limited caliber selection (or intend to rebarrel)... that will be about the easiest way to do a cheap ultralight build. Buy a kimber hunter 6.5cm, buy a stockys stock for it (in the future of course), have the barrel cut and threaded to your preferred length... and boom, you got a shootable sub 4.5lb rifle for about $1300. (assuming you can find a hunter for $800ish, you get the stockys with the rokslide deal at 30% off, and dont pay your gunsmith more than $150 to cut and thread). If you want to shave another 3 ounces, buy the mountain ascent (but it will cost you an additional grand) for its barreled action.
By the way... for those who dont think lightweight guns like kimbers shoot very well, I am of the opinion that it is the typical sporter style stock ergos (or lack their of) that is mostly to blame. I have a couple kimber uberlites that I modified the stock into a vertical grip (very short reach to the trigger, somewhat like the rokstok) and raised the comb... and by pulling back on the vertical grip, firmly and straight into my shoulder with the 3 fingers of my trigger hand, keeping my thumb loose and to the side of the stock instead of gripping around the stock... Im able to shoot far better groups than I ever could with the traditional grip with my thumb around the stock. Even though my 308win weighs just 5lbs 12oz including scope and suppressor and arca... it will still do subMOA for 5 rounds and sub 1.5MOA for 10 rounds... inspite of having the recoil energy of an 11lb 300WM... My 6.5Creed, has a bigger scope and weighs 6lbs 12oz suppressed, and has quite a bit less recoil, and will do 10 rounds inside 1MOA. Granted, Im not shooting rapid fire, and am waiting a bit between shots... So, I think a VG gripped Stockys Kimber could be a real gamechanger for those who want to shave some pounds off their gear weight, but not sacrifice shootability.
However, it will still be hard to beat a Tikka build if you want more factory caliber options, like 223rem... For a 10 ounce weight penalty, you can still build a relatively inexpensive rifle ($919 tikka fluted superlite from Sportsmans, $90 MTN gear bolt nob, $65 bolt fluting from LRI, $384 Stockys VG with 30% Rokslide discount, $150 cut and thread, $30 thread adapter to 5/8x24, $125 pure precision bottom metal, $30 wiser precision mini arca rail, so $1763 all in before tax and shipping... cut it to 16 inches, throw on DNZ Game Reaper 1 piece rings, a Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40, and an 8oz can like a Scythe or a S-Ti, and youve got a sub 6.75lb rifle all up... for under $3400 including scope, tax stamp, and suppressor.)
