If you’re willing to budge on your size like others have suggested, there is a variety of bully (specifically pit or staffy mixes) breeds that can fit this model. I.e my male boxer-pit bull sits around a lean 53lbs, loves to find pheasants, has a sense for danger, but loves adults, kids, and other animals (except squirrels, HATES then). Training and showing love is certainly the most important part of it all though. You certainly can find similar mixes in the 40lb range.

I just ended up getting her from a family in Cache County Utah. She's purebred, but not papered. My last bird dog was a GWP / English Setter mix, and we loved her, so I wasn't worried about a papered dog. So far my kids are loving her. She's definitely very timid right now with all the changes.

We have a jagdterrier, an absolute savage, super sweet, will kill most critters, intense excellent hunter, with insane prey drive. When he was a pup, we figured it was the closest you could come to having a wild animal, insane, my wife almost bowed out. Now at five, he is a gentleman, yet, small creatures best beware, he will fn kill em. Hunts birds like a pro. Not an all day cuttle puppy, maybe a few minutes a day.
Do some research before you jump in to one.

If I were you, I'd get a springer or a brittany and never look back. If I was me (and I am), I'd get an Aussie and try and teach it to do everything. Had to give up on chukar for the most part, but he's hell on grouse.

we got an English Cocker spaniel last year and he is a great family dog, they are a little high strung but the wife walks/jogs 3-5 miles a day and takes him out to play ball everyday and that keeps him entertained. I haven't had time to work as much with him on hunting but he has the instincts and will retrieve if he is settled in enough to see the bird fall, never an ounce of gun shy in him from day one. Our cousin that gifted him to us has two that are lights out some of the best upland dogs I have hunted with.

A bit larger than 30 poundos but I like my Hangin’ Tree Cowdog/Malinois mix. He tracks great in the woods and has great endurance.

You are looking at a spaniel as most have mentioned. I would go with a hunting bred springer spaniel.

Have a GSP & a Draht currently. I’d love a Teckel if my wife would sign off on a third dog. Perfect small hunting dog.

Mp GSP is fairly small (37lb). If you do your due diligence, there are some breeders who are producing smaller GSP litters.

@Redbeard88 I just wanted to say thanks for making this post. My family had been hinting (strongly) about getting a dog but I couldn’t describe well what kind of dog I would agree to. a medium sized mountain/hunting/family trainable dog that we could take on adventures without worrying about being an eagle snack or overpowering the kids is what I wanted.

We found an acquaintance that was looking to re-home a 3yo male Brittany and brought him home this week. He’s from a bird dog trainer but wasn’t as driven as his litter mates so he’s got the basics down while still liking to relax.

I was pretty stoked when I stumbled onto the Jagd a couple of weeks ago, but my wife isn't comfortable with the potential animal aggression (other dogs, cats, etc). From what I have been reading about the Boykin today, they seem to be my front runner now.

I visited with a guy just yesterday that has Jagd's. From the video's he showed me and stories he shared, I tend to side with your wife. But, he has a buddy that uses one to frog around crawfish ponds. Damn cool stuff!!

I've had a boykin for 14 years, super dog. Just know, you do not train a boykin, you more to the point "educate" a boykin. They are a thinking dog more than anything. VERY loyal to those they love. Soft to scoldings too.

Had and English cocker. He was about 18 pounds. Had that dog ever grown into this size of his courage, he could have conquered the world.
In the end that is what got him. He took a hunt in the woods behind the house and never returned. Pretty sure he was a gator snack. As we had had some issues there before.

My last dog was a Wachtelhund, and just simply perfect for me, my level to teach him what I wanted and his temperament to hunt. Retrieved from water in silence, pushed upland game at a snails pace and ran rabbits barking like a beagle. At his prime he was 60 pounds. ...........Sure do miss him.
