Shrek's Trek 2014

I have found a great aid in my recuperation ! Hot springs in White Sulfur Springs. It's not doing much for my motivation though ! Lol.

You can go on vacation after hunting season, get out and be miserable:)

This is my vacation and I'm not short on time yet. I can hang out for three more weeks if I can stand it. Going from sea level to 7800' pushing my old out of shape self too hard was counter productive but I should get stronger as I go and hopefully a little smarter. Heading out in the morning with a plan that I can execute. I'll get there. I'm enjoying myself and that's all that counts.

Go Shrek! I'm just getting home so I can follow you for a few days. I've learned that pacing myself is very important.

All my hunters are tagged out so I may get a few days and head up that way I'll let you know. If your just hanging out you might as well road hunt the south side of the range and get familiar with it.

Today was a bust. I was still stove up this morning so I rode around for much of the day but I started to feel better by late afternoon so I went over to the area I had jumped the elk to hunt my little plan. When I arrived there qas a hunter just sitting at the trail head. Stopped to talk and it turned out he was with three other hunters and they were doing exactly what I had planned. He had gotten I'll from something and was just waiting for his buddies to come out. With three other hunters back there my plan was wrecked and the guy was freezing so I let him in the truck to warm up. While we chatted his buddies arrive and they have a cow down within a couple hundred yards either way of where I had jumped the elk earlier and where I had planned to go.
More fun awaited.... it's been snowing pretty good up high and it is wet and slick . I'd been fine all day but all of a sudden I start to slide. Stopped with maybe 10" before I went over the side of the Mountain. Shook me up pretty good. I had the pleasure of putting on chains for the first time.
Going to have to make a new plan now. Those guys had been in there for the last two days and shot two elk. I'm thinking it's probably pretty burned up now.

There is more than 2 elk in there.

At least your instincts were right. I'm telling you that's the weather to hunt elk in nasty. When the barometer is moving so are the elk

I agree about the weather. I was and am stoked about the snow on the ground for hunting. Not so much that it wipes me out but enough to show what the animals are doing. After the slide I'm not too happy with driving in it though.

I have a question for the Montana elk guys. Should I expect to find bulls still with the cows or off on their own ? Makes a big difference in what I want to be looking for if I have any ambition to shoot a bull.

The biggest bulls are usually away from the cows by now, but not always. The biggest bull I killed was all by himself, about this time of year. The raghorns and spikes will often be with some cows and/or other bulls.

Shrek when you get a chance take some pics of the snipepod with the bino's attached. I have been looking at getting one of those for the times I don't carry my spotter.

Wyobowhunter , I'll try but my waterproof phone lost its waterproof today :( . I'll be driving back through Wyoming if you want to meet and see the whole system .Don't know when yet but for sure driving back through.

So like I said I made a new plan today. Didn't really hunt but instead scouted out a bunch of small state property and a ranch that may give permission to hunt. I didn't make there but have the contact information. Tonight I went scouting with my optics on a small school trust piece that interested me. I'm now whitetail hunting :) ! I have a plan to get back to elk but 160+" ten points get my attached quick. Going to be a tough deer to get at but I have to try.
The Minox 10x43 HG's are really growing on me and the Meopta spotter was kicking it tonight. Pretty sweet to count the points at .97 miles . If I can get the wind I need I might have a chance but the doe's are probably going to bust me .
My 4 year old Casio gz one lost its waterproof today and died and I don't think there is a Verizon store close by so no pictures until I can get a phone.
