Go buy a pair of trail runners or some Solomon quests. Something less stiff and that requires no break in time and start hunting.

Don't you keep any blister remedies in your pack? Tape, bandaid, mole skin, anything? Pretty important stuff having your feet in good condition.

I sure wish I could hunt the first two miles but it's a ranch. I'm hiking to the back of the ranch and waiting to see what gets run off when they hunt it all week. I KNOW there are plenty of elk there because I can see them. There's a small access point I can follow and then I'm golden. If my feet were good I'd be stoked but I'm dreading the hiking. It's going to flat out hurt. Hopefully the cold and snow will dull the pain and once there I can set up and glass and move as little as possible. Counting on adrenaline for the stalk and a feeling of duty to get an elk out. If I stike out I'm sure the hike out will be miserable. Anyone know if there is a place that sells the leukotape in Helena Mt ?

There's a Sportsman's warehouse, Bob Wards, and Capital Sports that are sporting good stores in Helena. I don't know if any sell leukotape. There is a Walmart. I know someone mentioned picking something up at Walmart. Are you hunting around WSS or Helena?

Go to Walmart, buy some moleskin. Cut out a patch big enough to cover your blister and then some. Cut out the area that would cover your blister. You want the moleskin around the blister, not over it. Put a double layer on, and you should be good to go. The idea is to get air to the blister to dry it out, and the double layer of moleskin will keep the blister from rubbing any more. When you're done with that, go kill an elk.

I got the moleskin and that's my plan. The moleskin keeps coming loose so I'm going to put it on then tape my ankles with athletic tape and form an ankle brace/cover that will wrap around the bottom of my foot . It'll be ok I think. Legs will be well rested and my mind ready to get out there by Sunday morning. Get back and set up on the saddles and see what comes my way.

Try not to laugh but this is what my uncle who was an Army Ranger did for years and years and never got a blister. Go to the store and buy some ladies pantyhoses! Put them on under your wools and you are good to go! I have heard of a lot of other people doing this and I am kind of surprised no one else has recommended this yet.

Shrek, I know you've received lots of remedies on blisters but I'll throw out another one for you and it works. When you are in close to a pharmacy, get yourself some Spenco 2nd skin. Trust me, it is the bomb. I've run multiple 100 miler ultramarathons and have had feet like that Lathrop and sons add here on Rokslide. Not only does it protect what has already been done, it heals the wound with the medicine in it.

I just got in from a really good day in the field ! I had the pleasure and honor of helping Clarktar's wife get her first deer. Their trip to a wma ranch had gone bust this morning so they called and said they were going to take me up on the bird dog on a place to kill a doe. I didn't have anything going on so I rode over to just hang and watch through the spotter. I would have been more than happy if I had just been there and had pointed out the spot. It worked out unexpectedly that I went and sat with her while Clarktar watched their baby. I hadn't planned to hunt so I didn't have a full set of clothes and gear but it was warm and sunny so it was all good. The weather deteriorated and it rained and blowed pretty good and we almost bailed because I didn't have any rain gear or even a decent jacket. I'll let Clarktar tell the details but it was a great day for me.

Helping someone take their first deer would have made the entire trip worth it for me. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

That is exactly how I feel about today ! If I strike out for the rest of the trip it was all worthwhile IMO.

Phew! What a whirlwind. I will post a story and pictures in the next day or two. Just wanted to thank Shrek publicly before to much went by. My wife is so stoked right now. She keeps telling the story to me over and over. She is hooked. And now wants to buy Shreks rifle!!

Thanks again Shrek!!

Clarktar , I'm looking forward to your account. It was great fun and it had a little bit of ups and downs and lots of action at the end.

While it's fresh in my mind I wanted to say that the Havalon Baracutta was great and fixed everything I hated about the Piranta. Cut deer like butter , didn't need to baby the blade , the handle was big enough that my hand could relax , and it's still pretty light weight. Very pleased and would recommend it.
