Shrek's Trek 2014

That stop was on my list of places to go on the way here that got cut out due to the rifle issues. I'm going to have to try and stop on the way back. I would have loved to have those guys show me what I missed setting up my Duplex. I'm sure I'm leaving some performance and comfort on the table right now. I know for sure I want a couple of pullouts and a five string.

I made it to the last staging place before I hike in. I was looking at my stuff and went to install the new sd card into my new TG3 camera and I'm now sick ! I managed to leave my new camera at the house apparently :( . Oh well , if that's the worst thing I run into I'll be fine. I still have my phone so I'll still get a few pictures but they will all be low quality and I won't be in them.

Good luck!
If you have smart phone - and get into signal, there are some free timer apps that can add auto timer to your phone...then just might have to get creative positioning/mounting your phone to something...or, can always go the "selfie" route...I now always have small adapter to mount smart phone to mini tripod.

Have fun!

Off the mountain tonight. I went all in today and totally smoked my feet and legs. Friday afternoon I hiked into an area that's a little over 3 miles as the crow flies. I ran into really good sign about a half mile from the trail head and was getting stoked thinking that if there is all this close to the road then I'm hiking into nirvana ! I crested the first peak and sign went away :( . No problem I think. The area I'm headed to has several parks and only one trail in . I get there and find a great little spot to camp and then hike back to the biggest park to watch until dark . Nothing.... Today I got up and was slipping through the park I had camped near before legal light and arrived at the big park about shooting time . More nothing ! This place is beautiful and there is nobody else around. I then slip around all of the parks looking and see plenty of ols sign but nothing new. I slipped down below the two larger parks and back to camp. A bunch more old dried up scat and crumbling prints. I decided that if I'm not hunt7ng sign then I'm wasting my time so with deep regret I packed up camp and started hunting back to the truck and the sign close to the trail head. I decided to drop off and slip along below the trail. All went well for about a mile and then it went to chit . Ran into a steep area covered in blow downs. The next mile took it all out of me . With a heavy pack and the up and down and over I was beat. Finally climbed back up to the trail and started hiking and was getting too tired to pay close attention. Right about the area I had seen sign on the way in I jumped four elk. I'm not sure if one was a bull or not but it dwarfed the others. No shot :(. The last half mile was painfully slow and I'm shot out. Blister on one heel and one on my big toe. Going to find a room and wash clothes and recuperate tomorrow. Then back to the area I jumped the elk. Looking at things I have a pretty good idea where and how to try and hunt them. I really sucked to hike way back in only to find that the elk were right by the road !

I haven't even begun to hunt yet. I just overdid it today and I'm not young anymore. The blister on my heel has already burst :) I was really hoping it hadn't and some tape and a day and it would be good enough. Now it's just going to plain hurt for the rest of the trip.
There was a few thing I forgot like that the water source I had been told about was dry so I was stuck melting the few spots of snow and that on the way in I hadn't used the trail but had paralleled it but above and just under the ridge. I'm going to start there Monday and see if I can work all the way down to the area they are most likely coming out to feed. It's a spot by the road but you can't see it from the road. I just need my legs to come back. I could hardly walk from the car to the room a few minutes ago.
I'm definitely going to be leaving the ss stove at the truck for longer pack ins and the same for the spotter when there is no place to use it. I packed everything and the kitchen sink in with enough food for five days never planning to actually hunt with it on my back. Way too much to actually hunt with on your back.
A big thumbs up to my western mountaineering Kodiak ! The bag is awesome ! Last year I froze out of my tent with a crappy Marmot bag but not this year. 31ºf and I had it unzipped half way :). It was worth every penny I paid for it.

So , looking at Google Earth I see I totally missed the largest park that was supposed to have water. I was going off a hand drawn map and a discussion over lunch and haven't had a long time to study the area and put it in memory. Now I think I have to hike back in there and see if they are using the last and biggest park and the area around it. No matter the elk near the trail head I have to know now.

Do yourself a favor and download the Gaia app for your phone. (I'm assuming you have a smartphone). Go in, find the area you're hunting, switch to the "Terrain" layer and select the area and download it. You can also download a satellite image if you want, but my experience is that it never looks the same anyway so I'm more concerned with the lay of the land. With the Terrain layer, you see terrain features and topo/contour lines. This is huge for scouting and route planning. Once you're in the field, you will have those downloaded maps in the app and you will be able to find your gps location on that map even when you're offline.

Just a couple notes: download the maps when you have wifi/internet connection, it will be much faster. Also, switch your phone to Airplane mode when you're in the field bc you won't have service anyway and Gaia will drain your battery quick as it's constantly tracking you're gps location.

Hand drawn maps? Really? Haha ;)

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have the topo on my gps and I just sent a screen shot of the area to my phone. The hand drawn was on a forest service road map .
