Glock g20 gen 5 jamming issues

An update for my experience with FTFs: I wrote this on another site too: I had the same FTF problems with mine. I put 600-700 rounds through it and still had the problem. I followed advice and switched out the mag springs for Wolff springs (supposedly 10% stronger than stock), still had the problem. I considered the DPM recoil spring because many folks said the Gen 5 springs can't handle the hotter loads. Centennial (CDS) recently came out with a 22# recoil spring for the Gen 5, so I bought one ($40USD). I took it to the Barber range in Palmer and tested with the stock recoil spring and Wolff mag spring, using Underwood 200 hard cast.......... FTF. I then tested target loads with the Centennial recoil spring and stock mag spring............. FTF. With stock everything I fired target loads (whatever was cheapest that day at Alaska Ammo, Winchester Target)......... No FTF with 30 rounds fired. Next I shot Underwood 200 hard cast using the Centennial recoil spring and Wolff mag spring................. success! No FTF with the 30 bullets I had left. I'll test more, but as of now it looks like for target practice I'll keep 2 mags stock with the stock recoil spring, for bear defense I'll keep Wolff mag springs in 2 mags and use the Centennial Defense 22# recoil spring with the hard cast hot loads. Not ideal, but a quick (albeit $60 solution for both aftermarket kits) solution. I still don't feel 100%, it'll take at least a couple more boxes of expensive hard cast with no FTFs to feel good. Having said that, I did strap on the 10mm when I went 4 wheeling up in Petersville last week. No grizzlies attacked me, but a moose and 2 calves walked right into our camp. :-)

Replying to my own post with another update. After the success with the CDS 22# recoil spring and Wolff mag springs I ordered 2 boxes of Underwood Hardcasts, one of their 200gr and one of their 220gr just to see if those bigger bullets would now work. And they do! 40 rounds of 200 and 220gr hard casts and not a single FTF. With my new confidence in the gun for bear defense. I bought a Holosun SCS, Streamlight TLR 7 HL-X, and a Gunfighters Kenai chest holster & Muddy River Tactical holster.

So, bottom line solution was a 22# recoil spring, and extra-power mag springs?

Yes, 100% solution for me, even using the 220gr. As I think I mentioned previously, the only downside is that when using range or personal defense ammo I have to use the stock recoil and mag springs. It takes 30 seconds. I have the Wolff mag springs in 2 mags and the stock mag springs in 2 mags. I’m happy with solution, although it took a lot of denials of the gun causing the FTF issues to finally get to it. Lots of “you must be limp wristing”, etc. Even a shooter I respect with a YouTube channel, Hickok45, as well as other YT hosts, have had the same problem with hot loads and FTFs.

It never ceases to amaze me, just how often mags are part of the problem with malfunctions.

Just to double-check, are you certain you need to remove the extra-power mag springs when going back to range ammo, after going back to the stock recoil spring?

Yep. At the range, after success with the new springs I loaded range ammo 180gr FMJs and immediately got a FTF, 2-3 shots later a 2nd one. I switched everything back to stock and no FTFs.

It’s really not a big deal for me to switch out the recoil spring. I live in Vermont, but go back to Alaska every year to visit my family, which is why I use the hard cast hot loads. Here in Vermont I rarely carry, but for a very tiny state we have a lot of bears. The population has grown to 8,000 over the last decade or more. For the rare times I carry while hiking or fishing in bear-heavy areas I use Xtreme Penetrators, which work fine with everything stock. I get bears at my trash can and compost, but so far haven’t felt the need to be armed on my land.
