Shrek's Trek 2014

...thinking of hanging out until Saturday...

If you have that much time available to you to hunt, at some point you'll regret leaving early. That point will probably be about the time you get half way home and you may think to yourself, "What if I had stayed one more day?"

As we all know, it can happen at any second. More than once I've been sitting with my shoulders hunched over and feeling down and out contemplating calling it a day. And then a few minutes later I've put an arrow through an elk.

Tomorrow is a new day. What if...?

Like I tell my sheep hunting partners,, "If you don't want to quit at least once during a hunt, you're not hunting hard enough". Get a couple Therma Care heat wraps the big ones, for your back. Those are great for cold sits, get cold start moving. Only takes a second to go from ZERO to HERO.

+1 on getting a partner, much easier to stay in the game.

When you have nothing left is the best time to go out and give it hell!!! Good things happen when your persistent!

You got this man!

Screw all these kind words of encouragement. Dude you planned for this all year. Spent a bunch of hard earned money on gear. Hours of your life lost planning and thinking about this.

You either man the f### up or I call dibs on your gear....

I know everyone is thinking exactly this but most just won't post it. Don't give up till your out of time. No problem day hunting but don't give up till your either out of time or tagged out! This is the moment you will remember, easy times always fade quickly.

Supposed to be sunny and the wind calm on Wednesday so I'll give it a shot. 20mph wind and 14 degree high tomorrow and there's no way in hades I'm doing that. 19 degrees and less than 10 mph wind I'll go for a hike down through the canyon I was hunting and out over the ridges. Dropping down into the timber fingers. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Take a day off to rest up and then do what Jason suggested and hunt on the move wearing gear that has kept you warm. If you're wearing yourself out quickly, you're probably moving too fast anyways and might be missing elk that are bedded down. Hunt till you absolutely have to leave. That's a long ass drive to be second guessing yourself about leaving too early.

The best elk hunt of my life ended with temps plunging to -15 with a 35 mph crosswind. When you're dragging an elk out through the snow, you don't mind the cold somehow.
Hang tough Shrek. It isn't actually too bad if you layer enough and don't do too much sitting. Still hunt your way through the day. With a front like we just had, the elk are getting hungry, and will be moving a lot more throughout the day. These next three days are your best chance to kill an elk this entire trip!

Rugby philosophy; If you're going to puke, don't drop to your knees. Puke on the run. It's more impressive.

Shrek - F### what any and all of us think. We don't matter. This is your hunt. You make your decisions for you. What you think matters. What's that voice inside your head going to be saying to you in two months? Will it understand, or will it badger you?

If you are not acclimated to the cold and are not sporting the best gear for cold weather, just move and pause, move and pause. Don't try to sit and don't move quickly enough to sweat. Let someone local know where your going to be. Call to let them know when you're out.

Use hand warmers, toe warders and heat pads. Tape your feet, wear liners and good socks. Wear some gaiters. You'll be fine. You can do this. Even as a Floridian.

But if you're just done with it, there's always golf...I could really use a Sawtooth!

Hahaha! F### me! Go kill an elk. All this shit is just part of your odyssey. On your return trip, watch out for gorgon chicks with crazy hair.

I can save you shipping on that sawtooth :). Elk will be out digging for feed during the day wed/thur, you need to be too. Practice, Preparation, Patience, Persistence...Hunting is trying to teach you. Easy to tell somebody what to do, harder to do it yourself. I'd be happy to take you out if need be, just don't jump ship and regret it later.

You can forget about the Sawtooth going anywhere. That thing is awesome ! When I was making the decision whether to hike out or not with weather coming the Sawtooth was never in question. It's bomber tough and a palace for one.

Suck it up buttercup! We've got 26 pages of following your hunt and it's been great or it wouldn't be the most active thread of late. We all want a hero story. We all want you to succeed. If you fall short of killing an elk, well it happens, but don't break weak and puss out. It's just a little cold, you can be warm in Florida for 11 months after this hunt till the next. Good luck and stay safe, just not too safe.

I'm staying and hunting through Saturday. By then I'm getting to the end of the bank account and have to go. Good to know so many are rooting for me.

I have my iPhone camera and I found my TG3 also. I had stuck it in a side compartment of my duffle bag and put a regs booklet over it. When I patted the side the booklet kept me from feeling it. Found the camera when I changed areas and checked the regs.
