Went to go meet Jeff this morning and the battery died trying to crank the Ranger. I'm waiting on a jump now but I'm done. Truck doesn't want to run , record setting cold snap , and low funds add up to me needing to get home. I'm nosing the Ranger into the wind as soon as I get her started. I'll be planning next years hunt on the way home.

I would say you gave it a good go Shrek. I am in North Dakoys and I know what you mean about the cold snap. I skipped over Montana to try and avoid some of the snow. Good work man. As a fellow rokslider, I am proud of you.

Well you made a hell if an effort. Sorry to see this end, it's been fun to follow and I sure would've liked to see you down a critter. Only you can say when you've had enough and apparently you have. Have a safe trip home buddy.

Well that sucks. I've drove MT to southern IL several times in the last 3 yrs. and its a loooooong drive. I can't imagine continuing on to FL. Have a safe drive home. Considering your dislike of cold maybe consider taking up bowhunting when you're less likely to have this nasty weather. I hunted yesterday morning till noon and it was brutal cold in the wind. Out of the wind was bearable especially when the sun popped out. It was a big adjustment from 50deg last week. It would be really tough for a Floridian.

Maybe next year. You know the area now and have a better idea of how to hunt it. I think you should give it a go again, but that's up to you. The truck was purely in pizzed off mode with the below zero temps. MAF sensor or something has completely checked out. We jumped it twice to get it to the gas station. Enjoyed getting to know you Shrek. Have a safe trip home.

Well despite all the razzing, I think there are a lot of us here who are quite impressed by your perseverance Shrek. Especially us Montana guys. Way to hang tough, and drive safe!

That was a long time to hunt every day with only a day here and there to recuperate. Even whitetail hunting where you go home at night will wear on you mentally when your at it day after day and it is not nearly as demanding physically as high country hunting. You don't need meat in the freezer to be proud of the hunt you had.

Plus, your truck was screwing up. I know if my Jeep had problems during a hunt it would be taking my mind off the hunt until I got it fixed.

Truck is like me. Runs fine down to around 15* but lower that that it don't want to go. It started running better around billings so I decided to try a spot from last year. Saw a bunch of nothing but I had to rush through it as I got there about three. As soon as I went to leave the truck would barely run. Temp had dropped. I just got back to billings and grabbed a room. It's supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow so hopefully I can make it out of extreme cold by nightfall and keep trucking. I've learned a bunch more this year and but for a second I'd have been successful. Really wish the cold had held off as I was getting close I think. I was pretty tuned up and was ready for four or five days of intensive hunting when this crazy cold weather rolled in and pushed me out.

I have been following along with you on this thread, but haven't chimed in until now. You definitely made a hell of an effort. I have spent 25 plus nights in the woods this year and am yet to fill a tag. Montana is being stingy with the animals for me this year (though I cannot complain about no opportunities...just operator error)

I admire your efforts and determination. For me a long drive to hunt is 5 hours...your trip Is unfathomable!!

These cold snaps can be pretty brutal and just sticking around as long as you did is commendable. Frozen MT is a whole different world. I live, work, play, and raise my family here and none of us look forward to cold spells like this. And neither do our vehicles....and this one is 30ish degrees warmer than 3 we had last winter.

Good work man, I imagine MT will have you under its spell, so good luck the rest of this year and hopefully she will be more generous next time you visit.

Shrek, I was ready to call dibs on the rifle this morning and tell you to swing through Iowa on the way home and drop it off (weather is cooling off here also) when the guys were going after the Sawtooth. My brother is in Montana hunting and only communication is that it was very cold. The feet deal had to be a killer. Better figure that out before next year. If your boots fit, you should need anything other than socks and I know you have had a hard time with that issue.

If it is going to warm up a little, the animals will start to move around. They don't like the cold much better than you. Might want to think about staying another day if the weather looks favorable. You are welcome to spend a night with us if you are willing to drive east instead of dropping to the south. My son would love to hear your stories.

Great effort no matter what happens and be careful on the way home. whitetails should be rutting and watch for lots of them on the road if you are driving at night.
