My dedicated elk rifle is a 338 win mag kimber Montana in a Pendleton composite stock at 6lbs 15 Oz scoped.

It’s got the barrel trimmed to 23”, a 2.5-8x36 leupold in Talley rings and a titanium bolt knob.
That is such a dreamy rifle. Any tips on managing recoil and shooting a lightweight .338WM off the bench (I have an 8lb Model 70 EW .338WM rig that I need a little help with and do not want a brake). Thanks!

Last year I used a pre64’ Model 70 in .30-06 weighing 7.5lbs and it felt perfect. Year before that was a Model 70 .300WM weighing 8.5lbs and it has taken a few cow elk no problem. Year before that was a Ruger M77 Mark 2 boat paddle 7RM weighing in at 7.5lbs, pretty handy rig. This year will be a Model 70 Extreme Weather .338WM with Leupold VX3HD 2.5-8 weighing in at 8.25lbs if we can become the friends we were meant to be.

No photo, but......

Rem M7 action
22" Hawk Hill 1-8 6.5 Creedmoor
(not sure on contour, finishes at .750 at the muzzle.)
B&C stock
Badger M7 mag system
Nightforce SHV 3-10x42 MOAR

It weighs right around 10 lbs. Balances and points really well.

Last year I was shooting 156 Bergers at 2650 fps.

This is the most likely candidate for this fall. It is a Remington 700 in 30 Nosler, topped with a Bushnell 3-12 LRHS. It weighs 9.25 pounds, without the bipod.

ZMOA-T30. I really like it. I am a fan of clean reticles for hunting. In this case, the "dots" are not noticeable/busy unless you're at higher magnification and looking for them.
I was on the fence with that reticle as well. Is it usable last light without illumination?

I don't have pictures right now but I have three options. No elk within 1000 miles of me currently though.

1) Winchester M70 EWSS, .270 Win, Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40. Weighs in just over 8lbs and is first in the depth chart for almost everything.

2) Ruger M77 Tang Safety, .30-06. I just got it in a trade but it will soon be wearing the same scope as my M70 and may get rebored to 9.3x62.

3) Ruger No. 1 in .375 H&H, 8lbs, no scope. It carries well and I would turn to this rifle in heavy timber.

I find I’m more afraid of being hit by the scope then the recoil in the shoulder. I also don’t like feeling vibration through the stock against my cheek which some rifles I’ve owned have done. So in my case I find the factory Montana stock fits me very well. From factory I found the Montana in .338 “recoiled” less then my Abolt that it replaced. I put the Pendleton stock on it and had the LOP at 13.75” because of my build and my long neck. I also used a scope with ample eye relief to keep it away from my face although I have that scope on all of my centerfire rifles because it works perfectly for me. I also find I’m noise sensitive so I wear ear plugs and muffs at the range.

To wrap that up for me. I need to shoot something that fits with ample eye relief on the scope, recoils straight back and wear enough ear protection during practice. If I do all of that the recoil isn’t an issue and this rifle isn’t hard to shoot. Like I said, it’s easier on the shoulder then the 9lb browning it replaced.
I only bought the stock because it was for sale locally at a ridiculously good price and feels slim around the mag box whereas the factory 8400 stock feels pregnant. I would of been just as happy to shoot it with the factory stock.

I also shoot all of my rifles off a bipod. Range work, field work, hunting, shooting gophers, load development… almost always off a Harris bipod.
