I have a few “elk” rifles, but, unfortunately, none have taken an elk. I had planned on correcting that small issue this fall; however, the pandemic got in the way. My newest-to-me elk rifle is a Remington 700 KS in 300 RUM. It weighs 8 pounds, 2 ounces scoped. It handles nicely, and it seems to shoot 200 gr Accubonds pretty well.

Where are you finding the 200gr accubonds? I've been wanting to try some in my rum, have always heard good things.

I stocked up several years ago for another 300 RUM that shot them well. I ran out of barrel life before I ran out of bullets so I am using the leftovers in this one. After those boxes are gone, I am trying 181 gr Hammer Hunters.

I forgot about my third option!
To be fair, this is far from my go- to anything gun. The recoil is just.... just awful. It's hard to shoot offhand & the accuracy isn't spectacular (1.5" groups at 100) but if I ever have to climb anything or hike a long way, i'll reach for it.

Forbes I had Melvin do a full treatment and chamber in 280ai. Shoots factory pretty well for a setup that weighs 7lbs all in but working up some test loads now to see what she will do. Leupold VX5 on top.

I also have a Tikka T3 rebored to a 35 Whelen sitting in a McMillan edge with mountain tactical accessories. VX6hd

My budget rig:

Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor
Leupold VX3i 4.5-14x40 CDS
Burris Z-Rings

Just shy of 8 lbs with a sling and full magazine. Made short work of this boy last year!View attachment 217337View attachment 217339View attachment 217340
(Nice bull!) I have the same gun and mine came with a burris scope mounted to it that I actually like quite a lot. I have shot many deer with the gun and am taking it on my first elk hunt this fall. Should I change out my scope rings? I currently have no problem with accuracy, I am just a little worried about my scope picking a terrible time to move. I am torn between "Ain't broke don't fix it" and "Leave nothing to chance."

Thanks! I would say you're probably fine if it's been reliable and held zero without issue, but if you're questioning it even a little bit, it may be wise to make a change. There should be NO room for questions when it comes time to pull the trigger. If you're questioning it, the next question you need to ask would be "what would I pay for peace of mind?" Good luck!

I've used a standard ruger m77 mk2, wood/blued in 30-06, with a Leupold 3-9x40 since 1996. No idea as to weight. Probably killed 20 elk with that rifle. From about 1973 to 1995 I used a standard tang ruger m77 in 270 win. That rifle killed elk as well. Lots of nice rifles posted on this thread.

Well that's a tough question. The last decade or so I tend to grab my custom Remington 35 Whelen when hunting the thick coastal rainforests where you seldom get a 300 yard shot. But then again if I'm hunting more open ground where shots can be farther out I take my Ruger 300 WM or my Sako 338 WM..
They all do the job with ease, but then again I have used a Remington 270 for decades and haven't had any bullets bounce off them either 😀
